started the soccer season with a
close game with Elma recently.
Elma started the game with high
shot that even Curtis Terpstra's tall
reach couldn't save. Then Elma •
scored again.
In second half a girl from Elma
had a nice shot on her own goalie, so
Dawson Peachy took credit for the
goal.
Elma scored again, but Brussels
wasn't done fighting. Carl Dow
kicked one between the pipes.

Another soccer season has begun
and the Blyth Lightning co-ed U-13
soccer team travelled to Goderich
Agriculture Park for their first game
of the season.
Goderich II was the host team for
this May 11 game. Parents and fans
settled in to watch the teams warm
up, and a short-lived rain shower
made its appearance just as the
official blew the whistle to start the
game. This little shower made the
field and the ball nice and slippery
for all the players.
Goderich was first to score in the
game. However, less then a minute
later half back, Brendon Boven
made a nice pass to Brent Drost for a
The 2006 soccer season is now
underway, and on May 9 the Blyth
Lightning squad travelled to
Lucknow for the first game.
The Blyth Lightning is a co-ed
team of local players ages 10 and 11.
The Lightning's first opponents
were Lucknow III. Blyth players
were stopped every time by
Lucknow's strong defence and their
impressive goalkeeper.
Coach Anne-Beth VanDorp gave
Blyth a pep talk at half-time and the
Lightning played a much stronger
second half. Since it is the beginning
of the season, this new group of kids
had only had one practice to learn
how to play together. In the second
The first game of the season for
the Brussels U-10 I was played on
Monday, May 8 at Jackson Park in
Listowel against Listowel I.
On the first half under sunny
skies, Brussels started off strong as
Wyatt Ducharme scored two quick
goals.
Listowel came back with two
goals of their own to tie it up.
Ducharme found the top corner of
the net again to score a hattrick.
Curtis Bloemberg played well in
net making several great saves and
keeping Brussels ahead of the game.
In the second half Tim Waechter
was goalkeeper and prevented any
further goals.
The game ended with a score of 3-
2 for Brussels.
The rest of the lineup for the
season includes Alyssa and Tyler
Cronin, Morgan Sheppard, Patrick _
Franken, Madeleine Rouleau,
Mitchell Kellington, Cody
Rathwell, Tiffany Deitner, Jenessa,

and Carlie Ducharme.

goal for Blyth. Brooke Snell made a
nice pass up the field, but it was
intercepted by a Goderich player.
,,Drost got the ball away from
Goderich to score another goal.
There were several more scoring
opportunities for Blyth through
penalty shots and shots on net that
hit the crossbar, but no other goals
were scored in the first half. Blyth
had a 2 -1 lead at half-time. Greg
Roetcisoender was Blyth's
goalkeeper and he did a fantastic job,
making numerous saves for his
team.
In_ the second half of the game,
Blyth's defence got a little sloppy
and Goderich scored three goals and
half you could see the team working
better together and handling the ball
with much more skill and
confidence.
Lucknow was the first to score in
the second half. However, it wasn't
long before Blyth earned a throw-in
whole in Lucknow' defensive end.
Forward, Jan Paul VanDorp took the
throw-in and the ball bounced on the
ground and into the Lucknow net for
Blyth's first goal.
Lucknow scored two more goals.
Then Julia Tyler paised the ball up
the field and Jan Paul VanDorp got
the ball past Lucknow's defence to
score. VanDorp then scored the final
goal and Megan Hoggart earned the
took the lead. Halfback Alex
Raynard made a nice pass to forward
Drost who scored for Blyth. It was
still anyone's game until Goderich
scored again.
This brought down Blyth's spirit
and with a last minute goalkeeper
change, Nick Brandon-Caldwell was
put in the net, Goderich was able to
get another goal in the last minute of
the game.
The final score was a 6-3 victory
