At the Branch
Auction begins busy weekend at Legion
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The Brussels Legion Branch was
very busy this week and we thank
our helpers for their work.
The Cadets did a great job setting
the upstairs hall in readiness for the
auction. The Comrades did a great
job in contributing and the day was a
success.
There were over 90 bidders for the
more than 180 items. It was very
busy from 3 - 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Euchre was held downstairs on
Saturday as - well with 14 tables at
play.
The first-place team was Gord and
Yvonne Dougherty with 83 points.
Second place went to Delores
Howatt and Dorothy Carter and third
place went to Mac Smith and
Eleanor Dane.
The low prize went to Glen Sellers
and Ed Stewart, who earned only 45
points.
Low hand prizes went to Edythe
Beacom for ladies and John Subject
for the men.
The Sunday night dancers enjoyed
the music of the Red Rascal Band.
More than 100 attended.
The next dance will not be until
June as the dance crew. is taking the
holiday weekend off.
The Friday night supper of roast
beef was enjoyed by all. This week
is sweet and sour meatballs and rice.
Condolences to the Alcock family
on the passing of Ken Alcock.
The Cadet Corps of Brussels spent
the weekend at Peacekeeper Park.
They left Friday night by bus and
returned St.nday afternoon. Reports
are they had a great time taking part
in games, strategies, camping and all
Cadet-related activities.
The Branch is hosting a Mother's
Day dinner on Sunday for the second
year in a row. Take Mom out to
celebrate.
We would appreciate a heads up if
you are attending. Just call the
Branch or Jo-Ann.
The Thursday night darts had 15
darters take aim at the boards. The
first-place team was Sandra Josling
and Nat Mirotta. Second went to
Marlene Little, Adam Smith and
Lawrence Mac han.
High shots were by John
Stadelmann, 140, and Sheron
Stadelmann, 115. The high starts
were by Harry Smith with 82 and
Sheron with 80.
This Thursday is the last night of
darts. It is for fun only.
Award-winning essay
How Lucky I Am
The following is the essay Tori Kellington of Brussels wrote and placed
third in the Amior Division of the provincial Remembrance competition:
How Lucky I Am
On Remembrance-Day I think of how lucky I am to have peace, freedom
and rights. I stand for two minutes of silence on the llth hour of the I lth
day of the Ilth month to rbmernber the Canadians who sacrificed their
lives and to pay my respects.
I am lucky because I have peace. I can join whatever groups I feel like
joining. I can play on any sports teams I want to play on. I can enjoy the
calmness of my •backyard. I can walk down my street safely to go to
school. My life is easier because I have peace.
I am lucky because I have freedom. I am free to have my own opinions,
thoughts and beliefs. I can go to church and believe in the religion of my
choice.,1 am free to live wherever my family decides to move. My life is
easier because I have freedom.
I am lucky because I have rights. I have the legal right to be innocent
until proven guilty. I have the right not to be put in prison without a good
cause. I have the right to be treated with the respect I deserve. My life is
easier because I,have rights.
I am lucky because I have peace, freedom and rights. It is because of the
sacrifice the soldiers made in both world wars that I can live in Canada
comfortably. I hope that Canada never goes to war with another country
again.
