There will be a 'Battle' in Blyth
I
By Bonnie Gropp
Citizen editor
Music lovers mark your calendars.
The Global Battle of the Bands,
national event is coming to Blyth,
Aug. 26, bringing with it some great
talent performing a variety of
musical genres.
The Global Battle of the Bands is
based out of London, England, its
roots dating back to 2004. That year
14 countries were represented. This
increased to 24 the second year, with
one of the new ones being Canada,
and has risen again to 30 for this
year.
Bands first compete in area
qualifiers. The winners of these
compete at national ones such as this
summer's in Blyth, then advance to
the international contest.
The national director for the
Canadian qualifiers this year is Jeff
Nesbitt of Blyth.
Nesbitt discovered he enjoyed
organizing large events after
volunteering as site manager for the
annual TransCan Motocross in
Walton last August. He has also
gained experience booking
entertainment for the Blyth Inn.
"I got thinking I'd like to run
something like this. We have the
perfect location, the soccer field is a
natural amphitheatre and I thought
I'd like to see bigger acts brought _
in."
Though he admits the magnitude
of the project .initally scared him
Nesbitt continued to investigate,

using the motocross as a hallmark
for success.
"This is a Canadian championship
that draws people from everywhere.
Battles of the bands happen all the
time, but they're usually small
scale."
His research let him to the Global
Battle of The . Bands, which
happened to be in the market for a
new Canadian director. Nesbitt
contacted them, developed a plan,
showed them the proposed site and
six weeks ago signed a one-year
contract.
.With North Huron council giving
its approval for the event, the next
step will be the qualifying rounds.
Letters have been written to 150
different establishments in Ontario
which typically offer live
entertainment.
As well, Nesbitt and his
committee are working to recruit
bands to participate. They can
perform any type of music
whatsoever, from- rock and punk, to
jazz, to country.
The only rules are that there be no
more than 10 people in the group,
with two being the minimum. The
music must be original, not covers of
other material and there must be
nothing pre-recorded. "The
musicians must create the music
themselves."
Representatives from the
organization will be present at each
of the qualifying battles. One
difference in the judging for these
contests compared to the national
one is that 50 per cent of the judging
will be by the fans. "At the national
battle audience voting is not allowed
as they don't want an unfair
advantage to someone local."
Nesbitt said there is a lengthy
judging criteria from head office that
takes in a number of factors such as
musicianship and stage presence.
Judges will be professionals in the
music industry, such as promoters,
managers or musicians.
"What they are really going to be
looking for is a band that has the best
chance of international success."
The winner of the national contest
in Blyth will qualify to compete in
London, Eng, Dec. 9 for the global
title. The choice there wins $100,000
plus a world-wide tour. "It's
definitely a prize worth competing
for."
Entry into the contest is $25 U.S.
per band member, but it's good
through the entire contest. "If
someone loses at one qualifier and
wants to try at another that's fine."
The time and closing of the
national event depends on the
number of bands. Nesbitt hopes to
see 100 competing, with each
playing three songs.
A program will be set up at least
for the first round so that people will
have an idea when they can come to
see a specific band.
There will be vendors set up and
camping available. 'We are
supporting service groups with this
giving them an opportunity to run a
food booth, or assist with things like
parking and cleanup. "This event
-works well because it's really
helping the community too."
Security is in the hands of North-
west Protection Services, the
"largest secuirty company in
Canada," said Nesbitt.
"I worked with them in Walton.
They are excellent, the best in the
business, having handled events with
up to 100,000 people. They know
their stuff."
Entrance to the event will be onto
Thresher Road off Blyth Road.
While Nesbitt has no idea exactly
how many may attend, he does know
that the venue in Edmonton last year
held 800 and it was filled to capacity.
"I'm pretty excited. It's a good
event, and a great event for Blyth,"
said Nesbitt. "And for the
musicians, even if they don't win,
it's a chance to meet other musicians
and establish contacts frod all over."
Nesbitt invites anyone interested
in information on any aspect of the
competition to contact him by e-mail
