Plan what you want before visiting the nursery
plant which has been grown outside
with little protection. Like the
shrubs already in your garden, this
plat is ready to face our climate. •
This area is in zone 5a and we get
lots of wind. Purchasing plants rated
for a higher zone, and placing them
in an exposed area will result in
unhealthy plants. •
Increasingly people are interested
in reducing watering. Selecting
plants which are indigenous to this

drought-tolerant will decrease
watering and therefore maintenance.

"The first consideration in a
landscaping planting plan is the
placement of the trees., and then one
considers where and what shrubs to
use," said Ingy Marshall.
Marshall, a retired high school
teacher, has worked at Greyhaven
Gardens during the greenhouse
season for seven years.
When Marshall designs a garden
her goal is to make it look good all
year round, and. to be as
maintenance-free as possible. She
says that she has no patience with
fussy plants that need lots of work,
and daily watering, deadheading,
and fertilizing.
To have a garden which provides
year-round interest and little
maintenance, the pre-planting
process is critical.
Marshall is concerned about
people who purchase canned
landscape diagrams, or who go to a
store and buy plants simply because
they are appealing at that moment in
time.
This can create problems,
especially at the beginning of the
planting season. Often the plant
which looks lush and is full of leaves
and blooms ha been sheltered in a
greenhouse for months. If it is
exposed to the wind and frosts of
spring, it will die or be severely
damaged. A wiser choice is the
