From popular flowering varieties, to fragrant lavender, to those with medicinal properties, the list and the uses are endless. To a novice it can be a little overwhelming. Yet, with-the trend today for using- more natural products in everything from cooking to health care, more people are becoming interested in the mystery of herbs. But where do you start? Certified herbalist Nancy Hislop said that for people wanting to start a herb garden, the most important thing is to decide what kind of herbs you want. "You need to know if you're looking to use them for teas, fragrance, for culinary or medicinal purposes." Once that decision has been made Hislop suggests starting with just three to five herbs.
