Local girls play for Hawaiian Challenge Cup
Central Huron students picked up by
the GDCI .girls soccer team for its
trip to Waikiki during March break
to play in the Hawaiian Challenge
Cup. Jenna Rinn, 18, of Blyth, was
the other.
Archambault said that she was
nervous at first, but with her parents'
support, decided to go, even though
there wasn't enough time to
fundraise for the trip. She said that
because she was able to talk with
them every day on the phone she did
not get homesick.
Both Rinn and Archambault
enjoyed the trip, even the long flight
from Chicago. Archambault said
that on the way out, it was fun.

Almost the whole plane was our
soccer team and parents and we had
fun.
"We flew to Hawaii to defeat
Waterloo Oxford." said Rinn with a
laugh.
Once in Hawaii, the Goderich
team found the heat and sun. "The
whole team suntanned the first day
and everyone scorched. I turned
purple, and just stopped peeling a
week ago."Archambault stated. But
I liked everything about the trip.
Rinn also experienced sunburn.
She said that her legs were so burned
she could barely use them and even
her head was burned between the
cornrows in her hair.
In addition to the sun, the team
faced the Hawaiian heat while still
accustomed to the Canadian winter.
The coach would only let the girls
play for six minutes at a time
because of the heat and humidity.
Archambault said that when talking
about the heat with the Hawaiian
team, she was told that the weather
was cool for Hawaii.
In discussing the differences
between playing soccer in Hawaii
and Canada both girls commented
on how well the Hawaiian team
handled the ball.
Archambault stated that the
Hawaiian Bulls is the best girls
soccer team in the United States.
They get to play together year round
and you can really tell by how they
just seem to know where the ball is
going to be.
Although one game was rained
out, Rinn and Archambault enjoyed
the experience of playing soccer in
Hawaii. Archambault had been told
that there was as much rain the week
they were in Hawaii, as is normal in
three years.
The trip was more than simply
playing hockey.
The beach just around the corner
from the hotel where the team stayed
was a big attraction. Swimming

Thelma Wilson, Lloyd Smith and
Isabel Craig.
with sea turtles and the colourful
tropical fiSh was a memorable
experience for Rinn. Climbing a
volcanic mountain was a highlight
for Archambault.
Archambault enthuses about the
experience of parasailing with Rinn.
She said that it was a bit scary but
fun, although she was surprised
when they were dipped in the water
just before being pulled back onto
the boat,
Spending time with the Hawaiian
team at a barbecue was enjoyed by
both girls. Rinn states that she
continues to chat by email with some
of the girls. The Hawaiians wanted
to know all about living with snow,
and shared what it was like living in
a warm climate surrounded by the
ocean.
A significant event for both Rinn
and Archambault occurred during
their trip to the Pearl Harbour
Memorial. There they met an ex-
serviceman who had been stationed
at Clinton during the war. Prized
souvenirs include those signed by
him.
Rinn and Archambault are young
women whose sports activities give
them a schedule that seems
overwhelming.
Rinn is at school most mornings
by 7:30 a.m. when she goes in the
gym and works out. She is the
school's athletics coordinator and on
the student's council. Almost every
afternoon and evening/is taken up by
training and sports. She is very
appreciative of her trainer who
spends four afternoons a week
helping her perfect her game.
Archambault shares Rinn's
enthusiasm for most ball sports.
Prior to becoming involved in team
sports. she showed 4-H cattle for five
years.
Soccer keeps both girls away from
school at least one day a week.
Archambault credits her teachers for
their willingness to accept her
absences and provide her with help
during lunch hours. This and family
support enables her to keep up her
school work.
