It was great weather for the Brussels Legion volunteers to
be outside frying up the fish and chips at the dinner on
Saturday night. (Vicky Bremner photo)
Lodge elects executive
The regular meeting of Morning
Star Rebekah Lodge was held April

McTaggart a Happy Birthday. There
was also a card to Bro. Ross Nichol
who is a 50-year member.
Word was received that Brother
Roy Elliott of London passed away
April 25.
The election of officers for next
year was completed. They are:
Noble Grand, Nelva -Scott; Vice
Grand, Jane Ilan; recording
secretary, Elva Brown; financial
secretary, Lois McCall; treasurer,

Local wins at Festival
Elly Schimanski y daughter
of Frank and Jennie of Brussels,
performed well at the recent
Mid-Western Ontario Rotary
Music Festival in Walker-
ton.
Schimanski, a vocal student of
Mary Vair placed first in the folk
song category, second in the
Broadway musical or movie
category and fourth in her sacred
solo.
Well hello May! The birds are so
excited about the weather that even
the little ones are trying to hit the
high notes. We have a very young
cardinal that is perfecting his song
and each day the improvement is
quite evident.
From the frozen ground of winter
moving into the warm days of sun
and suddenly the earth is alive and
.sending forth new life around every
turn. As the snow seeps into the
ground the welcome vision of winter
wheat is seen, snow drops are raising
their wee heads and the buds on the
trees say with definition that the
earth is alive.
I think heaven must be like a day
in May, the surroundings quite
pleasant to view like pretty green
grass. daffodils dancing in a gentle
breeze and tulips standing around.
Oh yes, that's my view each day
with my tea and toast — I'm there
already.
The folks that support the
Maitland Conservation Foundation
were also in heaven on Friday night.
The annual fundraiser was held at
the BMG Community Centre and
the evening was great. The donations
of goods and services that were on
display made you appreciate the
generosity of the supporters of this
good charity. Everything from a fine
walking stick to a week at a cottage
or a delightful dessert were there
waiting for your interest and your
money. Just think of something
you'd like some day and there it was
just waiting for you to take it hoine
by buying -raffle tickets, finding a
prize in your balloon or bidding by
silent or live auction.
A grand buffet was offered by
Beth Earl's Catering; she and her
talented assistants offered food that
put everyone in a generous mood.
I'm glad I didn't check the kitchen to
see if Gary Was lurking about — I
was too busy getting food.
Dave Johnston makes the auction
part of the evening fun. He has been
offering his services for many years
— ;and can get money out of most
people. His infant daughter Hannah
was along this year to supervise.
Listowel lent out Vince Judge who
yearly keeps the evening on
schedule.
So thanks to all the long time and
new supporters of the Foundation.
Keep up the good work. •
The Ethel United Church folks
have the cooking pots out and
they're ready to feed you on Sunday.
Be smart and phone to reserve your
ticket or you'll have to cook
yourself.
This is reunion week for my St.
Joseph's School of Nursing gang.
Time to head for Guelph with the
pictures of then and now. From
1970, I remember a bright orange
dress being a favourite — paisley was
in and of course all in polyester.
Bye now, Betty G.W. Thank You Brussels!
