Kelly Meighen, chair of the board of governors at the Stratford Festival of Canada, announced today that the Festival is moving forward with a new direction in artistic management and leadership. Antoni Cimolino has been appointed general director reporting to the Board and will lead a team of up to four artistic directors. "Antoni Cimolino has the vision, the passion, and the experience to lead the Stratford Festival into an exciting and innovative era," Meighen said. " We have tremendous 'confidence in Antoni to build a team of the world's most talented artistic directors and artists that captures and expands on the creativity for which the Festival is world- renowned," she said. "The Stratford Festival is a unique resource in the international theatrical community," Cimolino said. He has directed many acclaimed productions and this season is directing Cotiolamis with Colm Feore and Martha Henry. He began his career as an actor and first appeared at Stratford in 1988. later playing such roles _as Romeo in Romeo and Juliet and Laenes in Hamlet. "This is an outward-looking vision which gives us much needed flexibility," Cimolino added. This is how we will build on our historic foundation.- The restructuring follows the announcement last year that current artistic director Richard Monette will retire at the end of 2007 after completing a record I4-year term. - The new team, which Cimolino expects to begin announcing in early summer, will be responsible for the Festival's 2008 season and beyond. The Stratford Festival kicks off its Family Ties - themed season on Monday, April 24, with the first preview performance of the classic family musical Oliver! The musical, with music, lyrics and b6ok by Lionel Bart, features Colm Feore as Fagin and Blythe Wilson as Nancy (both returning to the Festival for the first time since 2002). Based on the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist, the musical follows its title character on his journey from a workhouse to a thieves' den and finally into the loving arms of his family Oliver! is directed and choreographed by Donna Feore. Musical direction is by Berthold Carriere. The designer is Santo Loquasto, the lighting designer is John (Jock) - Munro, the sound designer is Peter McBoyle and the fight director is John Stead. Ms Feore is assisted by assistant director Edward Daranyi and assistant choreographer Natalie Sebastian. Joining Feore and Wilson in the cast are Scott Beaudin as the Artful Dodger, Kyle Blair as Noah Claypole, Grace Chan as Mrs. Bedwin, Bruce Dow as Mr. Bumble, Barbara Fulton as Mrs. Sowerberry, Mary Ellen Mahoney as the Widow Corney, Brian McKay as Mr. Sowerberry, Tyler Pearse as Oliver, Brad Rudy as Bill Sikes, Stephen Russell as Mr. Brownlow, Katy Schroeder as Bet and Dayna Tekatch as Charlotte, as well as Brandon Banks, Christopher Fulton, Antony Grice, Erik Jay Larson, Nathan McLeod, Thomas Murray, Miles..
