THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 27, 2006. Babies need breathing room while sleeping New parents and caregivers should always remember: little sleepers need room to breathe while they sleep. Suffocation is the leading cause of death in children under one. "We always recommend you put your baby on his or her back while sleeping," says Marlene Price, public health manager. "Research has shown that this sleeping position decreases the likelihood of suffocation." There are many ways to give your baby more room to breathe. Ensure the crib meets government safety standards by checking the label on the frame. This is especially true if you are using a second hand ALBERT "PAT" MASON Mr. Albert "Pat" Mason of Londesborough passed away peacefully at Seaforth Community Hospital on Wednesday, April 19, 2006. He was in his 81st year. He was the husband of Pearl Mason. Pat was the father of Doreen and Doug Hamilton, Faye Hamilton and friend Mike Dermody, all of Palmerston, Judy and Greg Cook of Belgrave, Joan Caldwell and friend Doug Adrian, Rose and Joe Feeney, all of Egmondville, and Ron and Jen Mason of Vanastra. He was the grandfather of 12 grandchildren and great-grandfather to one. He was the brother of Mae and Al Cowie of crib. The mattress should he firm and fit tightly against all four sides. There should be no room for the mattress to sag. Parents like to see a nicely- dressed, decorative crib for their babies. However, having extra items in the crib takes up space and doesn't give baby enough room to breathe. Keep it simple. Ensure the crib is free of comforters, pillows and stuffed toys. "Parents and caregivers must realize that bumper pads are not safety - devices," says Christine Simpson, consumer product safety London, Jim and Irma Mason of Blyth and Kay Buchanan of Egmohdville. Pat was predeceased by son John Mason, one grandson and brothers Archie, Gordon and Elmer "Mike" Mason. Visitation was held at the Blyth Visitation Centre of the Falconer Funeral Homes, Queen St. on Sunday 2 - 4 and 7-- 9 p.m. The funeral service was held Monday at 2 p.m. Cremation with interment of ashes was in Blyth Union Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy memorial donations to the charity of one's choice would be greatly appreciated. Officer with Health Canada. "Health Canada does not recommend their use as they can pose an entanglement, entrapment and strangulation hazard to infants when not used correctly." Use a light blanket instead of a comforter or quilt. The heavier the covenng is, the more chance of baby suffocating. Keep covers away From baby's head and face. Always tuck in the edges of the blanket on three sides. Be aware of other suffocation health risks for your baby. For example, second- hand smoke is also a risk factor for suffocation in babies. Make your home smoke-free to ensure that your child is not exposed to smoke.
