(Photo submitted) 100 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE IN RURAL HEALTH CARE 1906-2006 In 1906 a group of citizens formed a company to provide a 32 room brick home to be remodeled es a hospital. This was the first hospital in Huron County. In 1946 the community raised funds to build an addition onto the original house. In 1035 an additional wing was added and in 1967 a second floor was added over the 1955 wing In 1985 the original house was removed and replaced with a modern emergency wing, In 1907 a two year graduate nurse program was established and ran until 1934. In 1942 a nursing assistant training program was started and remained until 1994 when the last of the hospital KM programs were transferred to community colleges. Throughout the last 100 years the community of Winghum and area has demonstrated its support of the hospital ttme and time again. Wingham & District Hospital provides on excellence in rural health care second to none in this province. We hope he comes along and enjoys a complete recovery. Chris Lee was a guest speaker at the Huron Tourism Association and brochure swap. It was a regional tourism meeting that included groups from Perth, Grey and Bruce counties. Chris spoke on marketing success stories from our area and others. Frank and Grace Dolmage attended the graduation exercises for son Brian on April 14 at Fanshawe College, London. Brian graduated as an agricultural equipment technician John Deere Ag Tech. Huron Tractor of Blyth has sponsored and employed Brian during his three-year apprenticeship program. Brian was the recipient of the Ag Tech Most Improved Student Award in recognition of his exceptional skills, professional attitude and his commitment to his chosen field and his academic achievement in the John Deere Ag Tech program. Wow — sounds like Brian is the man to fix our John Deere tractors! The B-W Trailblazers held their annual meeting and banquet at the Walton Hall on Wednesday evening. They met at 6:30 p.m. and enjoyed a roast beef dinner provided by the Walton Hall Board. The Walton Women's Institute met at the Walton Inn restaurant for their April meeting. Their general meeting was held first and discussions on • their upcoming 50th anniversary celebration were discussed as well as other upcoming important dates. Following the general meeting, the new executive for 2006/2007 was installed by Cathrine Campbell a vice president of the Brussels Women's Institute. The slate of officers installed were: past president, Ruth Axtmann; The Friday night euchre held at the Cranbrook Hall was hosted by Eleanor Stevenson, Judy Hahn and Edna McLellan. There were eight tables at play. The following were the winners: share the wealth, Jim Bridge, Joan Jacobs: travelling lone hand, Mary Davidson; ladies' high, Leona McDonald: ladies' low. We hope he will be feeling better real soon. We congratulate Andy and Darlene Vanderveen on celebrating their silver wedding anniversary. Their families and friends gathered at the Kinburn Hall for a meal and a social evening together. Speedy get-well wishes go out to Kathleen Cuthill, who is a patient in Seaforth hospital. Travelling to Hanover on Sunday to enjoy the Grey-Bruce Singers spring concert were Marilyn McDonald, Anne and Gerry Ryan, and Jack and Donna Knight. The Just Let Me Sing concert featured tributes to Patsy 'Cline, the Good Old Days and sacred and country medleys. Also attending from Walton/Brussels were Leona McDonald, Marjory Huether, Doris Fischer and Isabel Wheeler. Marilyn's son Bruce is a member of .the choir and the women report the concert was wonderful. Celebrating another birthday was the "best waitress" in Walton, Patty Banks. The coffee shop women enjoyed a little party for Patty with cake provided by Kathleen Williamson. Joining in the festivities were Marion Huffman, Marie Coutts, Mary Humphries, Marjory Fraser, Leona McDonald, Jeanne Kirkby, Audrey Hackwell, Heidi McClure, Gloria Wilbee and Kathleen. Cake and stories of Patty's trip to England were enjoyed. The next euchre will he held on Friday, May 5 at 8 p.m. The Walton Area Sports Club met on Thursday evening to discuss the upcoming ball season at the park. There are no minor ball teams due to lack of children, but at least adult teams will be using the park. Ball begins the week of May 7. Congratulations to Jamie Dalton and Jen Huggins who were married on the weekend. Jamie is the son of Kelly and Sharon Dalton. Family members of the Dalton; McCallum, McClure families were in attendance and of course had a great time. Congratulations to Judy Emmrich who is the proud owner or grandmother of a new filly. Her horse D.J. gave birth last week to a beautiful foal. It is black with four white stockings. Her name is Mystic and she's just beautiful.
