WI hostspotluck meeting Belgrave
The annual meeting of the
Belgrave Women's Institute began
with a potluck meal following which
Kay Roberts introduced four
finalists of the public speaking at
East Wawanosh Public School.
Caroline McDowell, Riley Fear,
Jared Logan and Laura Higgins each
gave their speech.
On Sunday, April 23, Bob and
Jane Grasby greeted worshippers of
Knox United Church and handed out
the service of worship at the
Community Centre.
Rev. Ethel Miner Clare welcomed
everyone. The hymn-sing selections
were Come In Come In and Sit
Down and Give to Us, Laughter.
These were accompanied by
Elizabeth Procter.
The call to worship, led by
Matthew Cottrill, was read
responsively. The opening prayer,
led by Carl Procter, was read in
unison from the bulletin. The Prayer
of Confession was Jed by Andrew
Procter and the Words of Assurance
were read responsively.
The choir sang Deep In Our
Hearts, accompanied by Elizabeth
Procter.
Psalm 107, the responsive reading,
was led by Megan Carter.
After the singing of the children's
hymn, In the Bulb There is a Flower,
the children came to the front. Rev.
Miner Clare talked about the word
Peace and asked the children what it
meant to them. Peace means calm,
the absence of war or a state of
harmony between people, they said.
Some symbols of peace are love.
heart and a cross which thechildren
drew pictures of. It doesn't matter
how small we are we can still help to
make peace.
On the Road to Emmanus was
presented by the youth group. This
was from Luke 24: 13-35.
The guest speaker, Allan Slater
was introduced by Rev. Miner Clare.
Allan is a Christian Peacemaker who
believed that God had called him
and other peacemakers to help in
Iraq.
The president, Audrey Fenton
conducted the business meeting,
which opened with the Ode, Mary
Stewart Collect, minutes and
treasurer's report.
The roll call was answered by the
payment of fees and a donation to
the Children's Hospital of Western
Ontario.
They listened to peoples' stories
and connected with Iraqi . peace
groups helping the people who were
in danger. Many people were
worried about the peacemakers'
-safety and ability to work in
Iraq.
They are encouraged when Iraqis,
who cointinue taking risks in their
work for justice, relate with openess
and trust. They demonstrate that
working out of trust is not only a

mother, Beatrice Margaret Nivins of

Congratulations to Darryl and
Janice Marks on the birth of a son,
Kurtis Robert. Kurtis is the first
grandchild for Jack and Doreen
Marks and the third grandson for
Don and Joyce Jacklin of Brussels.

Centre.
Winners were: high lady, Dorothy
Carter; second high lady, Nell
Johnston; most shoots, Helen
Casemore; high man, Richard
Moore; second high man, Gordon
Bosman; most shoots, Ross Taylor.
The next shoot is Friday. April 28.
It was agreed to serve a dinner for
an anniversary and to have a lunch
booth for an auction sale in the
hall.
Doreen Marks was nominated as
secretary for the annual meeting.
The slate of officers was given by
Nancy Jardin showing no changes
from the past year. Jean Fraser, the
gift, it is a necessity for building
unity and resolving conflicts in the
midst of violence.
Andrew Procter, Carl Procter, Ben
Procter, and Chris Cottrill took up
the offering.
The Creed was led by Ben Procter.

In the afternoon, following lunch
and a -social time, a service of
Celebration and Intercession was
held at Knox United Church.

education co-ordinator, Ruth Olson;

The curator's report was given by
Wilma Higgins. Doreen Marks
distributed the yearly financial
report. Norma Moore and Dianna
Robinson had examined the
treasurer's books and found them to
be correct.
There will be a program planning
meeting at the hall on Monday, May
I at 7 p.m. and the next meeting will
be May 16 at 7:30 p.m.
