THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 20, 2006. Some fuel-saving tips as gas prices soar Record gas prices make it a perfect time to "Be Car Care Aware". With gas prices reaching close to a dollar a litre in some parts of the country, Car Care Canada is offering gas-saving maintenance and driving tips that really work. "Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of gasoline is wasted every day by motorists, because simple and inexpensive vehicle mainte- nance is neglected," says Car Care Canada's Marc Brazeau. "Loose or missing gas caps, under-inflated tires, worn spark plugs and dirty air filters all contribute to poor fuel economy." Car Care Canada offers these fuel- During the hot summer months, contaminants, such as pollen, dust, mold spores and smog, can easily enter a vehicle's passenger compart- ment through the air conditioning, heating and ventilation systems, making'the air in the car six times dirtier than the air outside. Motorists can protect themselves and their passengers from these con- tainments by replacing the vehicle's cabin air filter annually or more often in areas with heavy contain- ments, or whenever heating or cool- ing efficiency is reduced. Cabin air filters clean the incoming air and remove allergens - especially bene- ficial to people who suffer from allergies. If your vehicle is model year 2000 or newer, there's a good chance it is equipped with a cabin air filter. "There are about 30 million vehi- cles in North America that currently have cabin air filters," says Marc Brazeau of Car Care Canada. "However, most people have never heard of a cabin air filter or don't know if their vehicle is equipped with one. Vehicle owners should refer, to their owners' manuals for this information." If the cabin air filter is not replaced, it can cause musty odors in the vehicle, and over time, the heater and air conditioner may become damaged by corrosion. A dirty or clogged cabin air filter can also cause containments to become so concentrated in the cabin that passengers actually breathe in more fumes and particles when riding in the car compared to walking down the street. Heat hurts transmission (MS) — Research by industry experts shows that nine out of 10 automatic transmission failures are caused by overheating normally attributed to summer driving condi- tions ranging from stop-and-go traf- fic, to towing heavy loads, to carry- ing extra passengers or cargo. Gates Corporation product engi- neers say that an often-overlooked cause of transmission failure is a leak in the transmission oil cooler hoses. Gates says the transmission should be inspected and the cooler hoses should be replaced, if necessary, at the beginning of the summer driving season. saving tips: • Vehicle gas caps — In Canada, the provinces with emissions testing programs suggest that this is a common cause for failing an emis- sions test — yet it is simple and inexpensive to fix. According to US studies, about 17 per cent of the vehicles on the roads have gas caps that are either damaged, loose or are missing alto- gether. • Under inflated tires — When tires aren't inflated- properly it's like driving with the parking brake. • Worn spark plugs — A vehicle can have either four, six or eight spark plugs, which fire as many as three million times every 1,500 km, resulting in a lot of heat and elec- trical and chemical erosion. A dirty spark plug causes misfir- ing, which wastes fuel. Spark plugs need to be replaced regularly. • Dirty air filters — An air filter that is clogged with dirt, dust and bugs chokes off the air and creates a "rich" mixture — too much gas being burned for the amount of air, which wastes gas and causes the engine to lose power. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve gas mileage by as much as I0 per cent. Other fuel-saving driving tips include: • Don't be an aggressive driver — Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by as much as 33 percent on the highway and five per cent on city streets, which results in two to 15 cents per litre. • Avoid excessive idling — Sitting idle gets zero miles per litre. Letting the vehicle warm up for one to two minutes is sufficient. • Observe .the speed limit — Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 100 kph. Each kph driven over 100 will result in an addition- al three cents per litre. To maintain a constant speed on the highway, cruise control is recommended. Not only will maintaining your vehicle save you money, it will also help you to protect the environment by reducing emissions. Are dirty cabin filters affecting your breathing?
