PAGE 13 ON THE ROAD! Tire maintenance a risk no motorist can afford (MF) — Experts say poor maintenance of a vehicle's tires is a risk no motorist can afford. Maintaining their tires to help avoid uneven wear, poor performance — or even blowouts, which may result in loss of control of the vehicle. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates tire failures or blowouts contribute to more than 400 deaths and 10,000 injuries in the U.S. each year. Yet, statistic's show that some drivers don't follow the basic tire maintenance guidelines that can help prevent tire failures. According to the Car Care Council, 26 per cent of the vehicles inspected at checkpoints during Car Care Month 2004 had low air pressure in one or more tires. "Although today's tires are more Loose gas caps. under-inflated tires, faulty thermostats, worn spark plugs. malfunctioning engine controls, poor wheel alignment and . the list goes on. These are among the conditions that daily cost consumers millions of dollars in wasted fuel. -- "Something as innocuous as an improperly tightened gas cap, for example, or one that's missing or defective, might seem a minor factor," says Car Care Canada's Marc Brazeau. "But consider that 1.7 per cent of the vehicles on U.S. highways have either misused or missing gas caps, causing 147.000,000 gallons of gas per year to vaporize into the atmosphere (source: Service Tech Magazine, September 2000). Canadians tend to better maintain their vehicles, but even then, Car Care Canada estimates that there would be 22,000,000 million litres of gasoline wasted each year." "To the maxim 'waste not, want -not,' we need to add 'be car care aware,' because most drivers are unaware of the economic consequences of neglected maintenance." Brazeau says the 22 million litres of gas out of the filler cap are literally a drop in the bucket of waste. "Among the six worst offenders are under-inflated tires and incorrect wheel alignment, conditions which increase rolling resistance. Like driving with the parking brake not fully released, it can cost a kilometre technologically advanced than ever before, regular visual inspections and maintenance are critical to enabling tires to perform at their best," said Doug Herberger, GM North America vice president and general manager of service and parts operations. Underinflation is the leading cause of tire failure, according to the Rubber Manufacturers Association. Underinflation or overloading creates excessive stresses and heat, and can lead to tire failure and a crash. Changes in outdoor temperature can affect the rate at which a tire loses air. Typically, a tire loses one to two pounds of pressure per month, and even more in warm weather. - To help avoid underinflation, the Rubber Manufacturers Association or two per litre on an average car." "Among other gas guzzlers," says Brazeau, "are dirty oil, a slipping automatic transmission, and a cooling system thermostat that causes the engine to run too cold. "Finally, there could be a malfunction of one or more components in the fuel, ignition or emission control systems, especially critical in cold weather driving. The fuel penalty for just one misfiring spark plug is one mile per litre. "Combining all of these discrepanCies into one vehicle, the cost of wasted fuel easily could exceed recent increases in pump prices." says Brazeau. "It's what being car care aware is all about." Not only will maintaining your vehicle save you money, it will also help you to protect the environment by reducing emissions. Simple checks Auto technicians say the key to keeping vehicles running well — today and down the road — is routine maintenance. Yet many drivers tend to stall when it comes to keeping up with some everyday auto-basics. Car Care Canada has identified the following areas of simple maintenance that are often neglected: • tire pressure • engine oil change • cooling system check • new belts • dirty air filters • brake fluid recommends checking the air pressure in your tires at least once a month and before every long trip. Tires must be checked when they are cold — that is, before they have run for one mile. Experts also say you should never "bleed" or reduce air pressure when tires are hot — it's normal for pressure to build up as a result of driving. If your tire sustains a blowout while you are driving, don't slam on your brakes — that can cause your car to swerve in the direction of the blowout. Instead, gently apply the brakes to regain control and slowly guide the vehicle to a safe area away from the road. Drivers can help prevent potential tire failures with expert advice and service from their dealership. Visit a local dealership for an inspection to ensure that their vehicle is up-to-date on its maintenance needs. The inspections can point out items needing service to help a vehicle run better, last longer, retain its value and provide optimal safety and security. No time to be wasting gas
