Sterner said that other areas have a
community fund to assist with
doctor recruitments. She also stated
(hat though many feel this is the
gr)sernment's responsibility that is
not the case. "The government does
not provide any community with
dentists, nurses or any other health
care professional."
Councillors have also often
expressed a concern that the
township residents do not only use
Wingham hospital. Sterner,
however, didn't see the problem.
"I think you need to remember that
you are councillors for North Huron
and North Huron only has one
hospital."
Currently the area is
underserviced by four doctors. a
number that will increase with the
retirement in June of Dr. Clare.
"I believe we are a community in a
serious situation," said Sterner.
Sterner also fears that the Local
Health Integration Service Networks
(LHIN) may determine that
Wingham can't support its hospital.
"If health care is truly the number
one issue in the province then it must
be our number one. priority."
A fact sheet outlined some of the
incentives currently being offered to
attract physicians. However, Sterner
said that with 101 areas currently
designated as underserviced
physician recruitment is becoming
more and more of a competition.
"This is not just an Ontario
problem, It's a whole country
problem, a whole world problem,"
said Sterner.
"You get a doctor to come here,
you've robbed somebody else. It's
really quite a dilemma."
Herrfort, who is working as co-
ordinator for the committee said
doctors today have a different
lifestyle than years ago. "It is a
different way of recruiting doctors
than in the past."
"We wanted to let you know
whatour problems are and get your
support," said Sterner.
"Wingham District Hospital
celebrates 100 years in rural health
care this year. And we hope to see
many more."
