THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 20, 2006. Letter to the editor Organizer expresses thanks to Grey residents THE EDITOR, We would like to thank the residents of Grey Twp. who attended the meeting last Wednesday night. We would like to apologize for not being able to finish our presentation and explain our information. We Letter would also like to apologize for the one-hour meeting we had planned, turning into a three-hour show. The residents and taxpayers were invited to this meeting so they could be presented with a petition that would be forwarded to the provincial government. This was not an attack on Huron East council, as they seemed to believe. We wanted to have a meeting to share the concerns of people of Grey have shared with us. We also wanted the people of Grey to feel free to get up and speak and not feel intimidated. If the provincial government decides to allow municipalities to deamalgamate, we need to be prepared to show that Grey can be as viable on its own again, as it was for 144 years. We will continue, along with the other 50 plus municipalities, to push the provincial government to listen to the public concerns. John Gillis. Town & Country appreciates support THE EDITOR, Norma Preszcator and the dancers from the Carry On Cloggers, deserve an extra round of applause for their fantastic presentation — Reel Movies — on April 9 at the Blyth Memorial Hall. The 80-member dance club offered two concerts to packed houses for afternoon and evening shows. The performances featured high stepping dancing, great music, clever choreography, excellent Continued from page 1 the money is going. A question was- raised as to how much money was going into road work • in Grey. No one had the answer at the meeting. Seili made the information available to the media the next day after the meeting. The net expenditures from 2001- 2006 for road, bridge and storm sewer work for Grey is $1,001,612. "Keep in mind, because of gravel roads in Grey it takes more maintenance gravel than McKillop does to hard surface concession roads," he stated. "This year (it) will be $120,000 for Grey," he said. "Some people thought that we came down hard on them," treasurer finance-manager Brad Knight said in a phone interview after the meeting. "There was information from the budget that was misinterpreted and that could have done and I think did, damage. Our concern was with incorrect statements [such as] saying that we had deficit financing, which is against the law." According to , Howling. homeowners in Grey have been expressing interest in de- amalgamation for at least a year. "We [conducted] a survey and 85 per cent of the people said they were at least interested in hearing about ide-amalgamation[;' he said. The survey was conducted door- to-door approximately one year ago. costumes and skits with more than 26 different numbers. It was a great show with lots of laughs and high energy entertainment. Norma Preszcator and the Carry On Cloggers love to have fun, they love to entertain, and equally as important, they have made such a large contribution to charities in Huron County through their dancing shcws. This year's performances marked the 10th production for the cloggers, which in total have raised Howling said although he didn't continue with any more surveys recently he was still anticipating a lot of interest. About 50 people showed up at the meeting despite the stormy weather, including William Higgs, a former councillor from Bayfield who spoke against the way in which amalgamation was distributed. thought we lived in Canada," e said. "We didn't have a chance to look into it, to decide on it." Higgs said he didn't understand how amalgamation saved money. "Councillors' paycheques rise. How do you save money? [The budget for Bayfield was] $315,000 for everything before amalgamation and it is $747.000 this year. How did we save?" He also said he isn't sure that amalgamation means better representation. "Council will take [a taxpayer's issue] to council and lose if the rest don't agree. They are out to represent their own area. They don't care. Why would they care?" He added that in some communities amalgamation works well but, "the vast majority are not happy." Huron East deputy-mayor Bernie MacLellan questioned Higgs on his comments. "Some things that you mentioned have no bearing in Huron East.' he said. Higgs responded that- he chose hyperbole and examples at the more than $38,000 for local causes over the years. Town and Country Support Services is honoured to have been chosen to receive a portion of proceeds from this year's show. The $2,000 donation will go a long way to helping provide services to help Huron County seniors, frail elderly, people with illness and disabilities. Town and Country counts on donations to assist programs like — Meals on Wheels, Dining for extreme to illustrate his point. One man in the audience said he felt he had good representation. "We have a different system, that's all. But it's a broad statement [to say that amalgamation means residents aren't well represented.]" Higgs said he wished he had been asked before amalgamation. "I find it difficult to hear council come back and say we've decided." Grey resident, Dave Joslin said he is against amalgamation. "We need an absolute system of right or wrong, checks and balances. The government that is closest to the people is the best one for the people." Joslin said he is really upset with the province for giving amalgamation without asking for the people's opinion. "We can run our own affairs here quite nicely, thank you," he said. Howling made a presentation giving quotes from premier Dalton McGuinty before he took office when he was against amalgamation. He also presented an estimated budget if Grey did separate. Beaven and Knight corrected Howling on several of his figures. "There are more figures I didn't have," Howling said after the meeting. "I'm not an accountant." Grey resident Dave Diehl was upset that councillors attended the meeting. "They weren't invited," he said. "This was a meeting for the people in Grey to see how they Seniors, Volunteer Transportation and Friendly Visiting.
