Huron councillors By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor What will the neighbours think? That was the concern of North Huron councillors when they learned Monday night of a plan to host a National Battle of the Bands concert in Blyth, Aug. 26. Clerk-administrator John Stewart explained that Jeff Nesbitt was chair of the organization and had requested use of the soccer field by the arena that day. The event would probably run from 11 a.m. until 11 On Thursday, April 6 South Huron District High School will be host to the Huron Jazz and Percussion Festival presented by the music departments from Central Huron Secondary School in Clinton, South Huron District High School in Exeter, F.E. Shannon Thunderbird, whose annual two-week series of programs for Grade 6 students are supported by the Foundation for Enriching Education Perth Huron, will return the favour with this month's concerts. A member of a West Coast indigenous nation, Shannon Thunderbird tells the stories of her people using drumming, singing, dancing and audience participation. "Sometimes she'll have 60 kids at a time, and she'll have those 60 kids just sitting in the palm of her hand," explained Foundation executive director Lynda McGregor. "Some (school) secretaries tell me they'll hear kids singing in the playground for a few days afterward. "We don't have very many First Nations people in this area, so the kids are sometimes victims of misinformation," she added, noting Grade 6 is the year Ontario's schoolchildren study a major unit about the place of Native peoples in Canadian culture and history. Stewart noted that when that soccer field had been created there had been talk of it being used for outdoor concerts because the slope created a natural amphitheatre. However, he added, that with any open air concert in the summer, there is always a concern for the neighbours. "It's going to be reasonably loud and may not be to everyone's taste," said Stewart. evening of music you will not soon forget. The evening will feature jazz ensembles from each of the four high schools, percussion ensembles from Central Huron and South Huron, two collaborative massed jazz groups comprised of students from all four schools performing together and a special segment from guest artists, God Made Me Funky, a Toronto-based funk group who will work with the students during the the school board's Seaforth headquarters and raises money to benefit Avon Maitland students, but operates separately so it can maintain charitable status. Thunderbird's two fundraising performances are open to all. The April 22 event, at 8 p.m. in Stratford Northwestern Secondary School, will be preceded by a dinner at the school's much-talked-about Screaming Avocado cafeteria. It's the home of Northwestern's culinary arts program, with students not only preparing the food but also taking care of all other duties which are essential to the restaurant business. A special treat for Thunderbird, according to McGregor, will be the presence of several visiting high school students from the Dene A well-travelled artist returns to her favourite place in the world with an exhibit at Goderich Co-op Gallery. Guest artist for April is Sally MacEwan, who finds inspiration in the landscape and landmarks of Huron County and Goderich. "My travels give me many experiences that I cherish, but this part of Ontario gives me my passion. I live in Goderich and south-western Ontario. The area is so beautiful. My love of the area is reflected in my work. I love to paint the places that I pass by every day of my life." MacEwan has travelled extensively in Canada, the States, Great Britain, and Europe. "They are expecting a huge turnout," said Stewart, adding that Nesbitt had indicated they may be able to reschedule the event to eliminate any conflict with the wedding. "We are trying to deal with any potential problem before it happens and are looking for some direction from council," said Stewart. day in musical clinics and workshops. However, he added, "these seem to depend on the type of music being played." Councillor James Campbell wondered if it would be possible to shorten the time so that it ends earlier in the evening. "I think 10 would be better. Especially when people have listened to this all day." Stewart said that might be a possibility as the length of the concert would depend on the number of bands involved. Reeve Doug Layton and councillor Arnold Taylor both said they felt the residents should be contacted ahead of time to let them know what was being proposed. On the plus side, deputy-reeve Murray Scott pointed out that there would probably be a spinoff on this for service groups.
