County receives
federal money
to create jobs
The Huron Community Matters
project has been given a financial
boost thanks to funding secured
from the Government ofCanada.
The Huron United Way and its
partners The County of Huron and
the Huron Business Development
Corporation (HBDC) have received
$45,000 through the Job Creation
Partnerships Program from the
Government of Canada towards a
second phase of the already
ongoing Community Matters
project. In addition to the funding,
the project will create employment
opportunities for six individuals.
Project manager, Rebecca
Rathwell, expressed delight when
parlaying that there will be project
assistants placed in four county
offices, the Huron Business Centre
in Seaforth and the United Way
office in Goderich.
"We are pleased to be
undertaking work on a number of
priority tasks, including holding a
Community Engagement event on
June 7 and 8, updating the Huron
Business Inventory and
investigating youth enterprise
opportunities. We are also going to
undertake significantupdates to
information and referral material
and also promoting career
opportunities working with seniors.
The focus of the work to be
completed over the year-long
project, which has already
commenced, will be in priority
areas of economic development,
affordable housing, employment
and training: and youth in the
county."What we learned, said
Scott Tousaw of the Huron County
Planning Department, from
individuals who attended the 20
community consultation meetings
held last spring, was that they are
proud of the assets and the
initiatives in their communities but
also that there are issues that need
some attention. Expressed by
almost every group was the need for
additional resources to work in
these priorities."
Huron United Way executive
director, Kimberley Payne said,
"We know that there are already
many dedicated people working in
the community on these very
matters, and doing great things. We
just want to be able to help them do
more and we are very pleased that
Service Canada could make this
happen."
In one area park, a group of
enthusiasts use the ramps for
running exercise.
"We challenge you — the Blyth
community to respond. Help us to
continue our reputation of being a
caring community where
volunteerism is our mandate."
If you can help or have
suggestions, attend the meeting on
April 26.
