Horsing around
Hugo Bontrup, a horse breeder from Londesborough offers a peaceful and fun retreat from the
hustle and bustle of city life on his farm. (Heather Crawford photo)
PAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 6, 2006.
Local says there's no better job than his
getting to see visitors from the city
who come out to the ranch for the
afternoon let loose and have fun.
"We like to get [visitors] to free
themselves from the city," he
said.
The lands are expansive and a trail
ride through woods, fields and near a
swamp is not for anyone pressed for
time.
"A lot of people want to schedule
a ride between a certain time and
you just can't do that," he said.
Bontrup likes to take his time,
amble through the woods and relax
while on horseback. He said he often
finds people who are new to the
experience a little hesitant and
nervous at first but eventually he
looks back from the head of the pack
and sees everyone in quiet
contemplation, appreciating the
nature around them and enjoying
themselves.
"That's what I like to see. When
people come here with their kids and
they forget about the city for
awhile," he said.

Hugo Bontrup, a horse breeder out
of Londesborough says he can't
think of a better job than the one he
has.
Bontrup moved to Londesborough
with his wife five years ago from the
Milverton area but he grew up in
Holland.
"I always tell people that I
watched too many cowboy western
movies as a kid and that's why I
wanted to move out here," he said
adding that Bonanza was a favourite
when he was growing up.
Before buying and breeding horses
Bontrup tried his hand at different
aspects of farming but said he has
The smell of roast beef and
homemade pies was wafting down
the streets of Auburn with the beef
supper Wednesday, April 5. Sittings
were at 5:30 and 7 p.m. A silent
auction was also held at the Auburn
Hall with over 70 items up for grabs.
Articles varied from tire
extinguisher, baby quilts, and
dinners, to a cottage for two
nights.
The UCW is looking forward to
always loved horses.
An experimentalist at heart, he is
working on making horseshoe golf
as popular a sport in Canada as it is
in his homeland of Holland. "The
idea is just to have a little fun," he
said. "You have to make time for fun
too."
Horseshoe golf, Bontrup said, was
started in Holland when a farmer
who wanted to play golf became
frustrated with all of the fees and
hassle of having to belong to a club.
"So he went home, attached a
horseshoe to a golf club and played
in his own field. It caught on and
now it is very popular all over
Europe."
Bontrup would like to set up a
course on his own grounds
their meeting April 10 at 1 p.m.
when they will assemble the Easter
baskets for delivery.
Two birthdays are being reported
in Auburn at this time. Matt Lee
celebrated his 30th birthday on the
weekend. A small gathering marked
the occasion.
Coming up April 15 (actual
birthday is on the April 18) is Mike
Ryan's 50th birthday. Anyone
wishing to drop in and wish the 'old
boy' many happy returns of the day,
can drop by the house on the
afternoon of April 15.
The Huron West Women's
Institute held its planning meeting in
Auburn on Monday, April 3. Plans
eventually but right now he likes to
play for fun.
Another experiment on his farm is
milking horses. He claims that the
milk from a horse will help soothe
aching muscles and also treat skin
conditions. "It's much sweeter (than
cow's milk). I think it's similar to a
sweet wine."
For now he is milking the horses
for his own personal use but would
like to begin selling and marketing
in Canada soon.
Aside from his new projects,
Bontrup is happy to get up and go to
work every day.
"Isn't this a great place to work?"_
he asked. "I'm very lucky. I love my
job."
One of the greatest perks he said is
for the District annual meeting in
May and nominations for their new
executive was the agenda.
Along with a theme for the day,
the group shared ideas for guest
speakers as well as ideas for
entertainment.
The Auburn Women's Institute
will be holding its a annual meeting
on April 20 with lunch at Sticker's
Restaurant. As District president, I
have been invited as their guest and
I am honoured to attend. The new
executive will be installed at that
time.
That's it for another week. Keep
smiling. Everyone will wonder what
you've been up to.
