THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MARCH 23, 2006. Spring has officially arrived and one can only hope that the weatherman will co-operate. April can be tricky but any winter that comes now will be short lived and we can start looking forward to Liz MacGregor, from Londesborough, will be leaving from Croydon, south of London, England UK on Monday, March 27 joining hundreds of hitchers from around the UK, to participate in the world's largest organized hitchhiking event to Morocco. This is the 15th anniversary of Link Community Development's sponsored fundraising event, which aims to raise vital funds for its work in developing education in Africa. MacGregor said, "As a student I really appreciate the value of education and understand how important LCD's work is in improving education in Africa. I'm really looking forward to this — it's not something you get to do everyday. LCD works really hard to reduce the risks involved with the event, making me feel I'm doing something adventurous but safe." Sir Ranulph Fiennes, hitch patron said, "It is an exciting challenge and a test of endurance, and all for an incredibly worthwhile cause." warmer and brighter days. Just the lengthening days recently has been spirit lifting. Although we enjoy the changing seasons from our location, it is still comforting to realize any trip, regardless of its length, will be stress-free weatherwise. With the spring can come vagaries of weather that keep one guessing just how to dress some days. From that little book by Anne Tocher, My Mother Always Used to Say That Too... that I quoted before, come these words of wisdom. See if you haven't heard them at least once or twice ... "Take a cardigan. You'll Rough Guides supports the hitch which can take from two days to three weeks to complete and last year over 450 hitchers raised more than £180.000 for LCD. This year over 900 people have registered, making it LCD's biggest ever hitch. All hitchers have to participate in a health and safety session and travel in a minimum of a pair, one of whom has to be male. Hitchers must take the necessary insurance and be in daily contact with LCD or a nominated contact. Because of the importance LCD places on the hitchers' safety, there haven't been any major incidents on the hitch in its 14 years. Hitchers come back with fabulous stories; last year some hitchers were picked up by Argentinean footballer Juan Roman Riquelme in a Porsche in Spain. One hitcher changed their name by deed-poll to raise even more money for LCD. Kate Brackenborough, LCD events officer, said, "This year is going to be the best ever hitch. It's catch your death of cold going out dressed like that. Are you sure you'll be warm enough? Don't take the jacket off." With a sunny day or two who among us does not think of summer activities. Minor ball players for the Londesborough diamond should remember to register this Thursday and Saturday at the Hullett school. The Hullett SAC committee reminds the community that their carnival and silent auction night is just four weeks away on April 21. Women of Londesborough United Church are reminded that this'. Friday, March 24 is the work bee day extra special because it's the 15th anniversary and thanks to the work of dedicated individuals we're able to make a real difference to the improvement of education in Africa. "What's also great about the hitch is that it's primarily a student-led event, showing young people's concerns for education in some of Several Huron County dairy producers received honours for their milk quality. Betty Anne Elliott, the field service rep for the Dairy Farmers of Ontario presented gold awards at the Huron County Dairy Producer committee meeting in Brussels on Thursday, May 2. Elliott extended congratulations to at the church. It's always more fun to chore with others and there will surely be a task for everyone who drops by that day. Early birds plan to get started at 9- a.m. but you can stop in any time to lend a hand. Anne Potter and her two sons escaped injury one day last week in Cargill when her car and a larger truck tried to occupy the same stretch of pavement. Unfortunately her car was not so lucky and when I spoke with Anne on Saturday, she was much more collected and waiting to hear from the insurance company. the poorest places in the world."
