PAGE 11. By Rev. Robin McGauley Blyth United Church On Christmas day I learned how to knit. I unwrapped a box full of variegated yarn and rather large needles. A few hours later, after some instruction by my mother, I was well on my way; knitting, purling, knitting, purling, a repetitive, addictive bliss. Since this first lesson I have found out so much more about knitting than just how to make the stitches. I have learned that by knitting I am actually engaging in a cultural revival. This is because, believe it or not, knitting is back in fashion. It is actually a growing trend among young people to pick up needles to create funky hats, • colourful scarves and one of a kind handbags. When you check out any knitting magazine today you will find patterns geared toward the young modern knitter. This may come as a surprise to The Blyth Festival Singers are embarking on a musical tour of Europe with their upcoming concert. To be held on Sunday, April 2 at North Street United Church in Goderich, at 2:30 p.m., the concert is a whirlwind • musical tour through Ireland, Italy, France, Germany, Hungary, Norway and other countries. The concert will feature the music of Mozart, Scarlatti, Durufle, Irish and Hungarian folk songs, and much loved choral arrangements like Gabriel Paure's Cantique de Jean Racine. The 52-voice community choir is under the direction of Robert Blackwell of Goderich, with accompanist Sharon Johnston, of Goderich. The European Excursion concert will also feature special guests Cow and Sow, a viola and piano duo from Perth County. When they're not farming, Dominik Franken and David Murray make sweet music together with the unique duo Cow and Sow. Both classically-trained musicians, the two farmers formed the duo Cow and Sow in 1990. They have recorded two CDs, Dances and Romances, and Illumination. The duo has been featured on CBC Radio and has played many concerts together, including a "shed concert" at the Murray farm. Born in New Hamburg Murray grew up in a musical family singing in church and school choirs, taking piano lessons and playing several instruments in the high school and town bands. He played bassoon with the Kitchener-Waterloo Youth Orchestra and studied music at Wilfrid Laurier University, majoring in bassoon performance. After Murray spent time in Europe you. Knitting seems an unlikely pastime for busy, energetic young adults when just a decade ago the craft was considered an old- fashioned hobby for gossipy elderly women. Besides, there was just no room in the lives of busy working women who were faced with little spare time between personal career goals and the demands of family. Women of today seem to have little reason to knit when everything they need can be bought quickly and cheaply at the nearest department store. Yet, today the attitudes about this ancient craft are quickly changing. A new generation of career women is realizing the benefit of slowing down and incorporating hobbies like knitting into their otherwise busy routine. As a result, knitting groups have sprung up all over North America and in Europe. Like the old- working on a dairy farm, he returned to Canada and enrolled at the University of Guelph and completed his associate diploma in agriculture. He, his wife Annamarie and four children have been milking cows since 1986 on the farm where Annamarie grew up. Cow and Sow was created when David met his neighbour Franken, who immigrated to Canada from Germany in 1986. Franken grew up in a world filled with classical music. When he was eight years old, his physician/violinist father set out to find him the very best teacher. His quest led him to Erich Brandt, concert master of the Wuppertal Orchestra. Franken studied violin and viola fashioned knitting bee young women today get together at a local café once a week to knit together, to help each other with their projects, and to just plain relax and get away from the stress of daily living. In certain circles many are also realizing the spiritual side to the act of knitting. These women have discovered that setting time aside to engage in a creative activity helps them to experience a sense of God's presence. As she makes a garment for another person she incorporates acts of prayer and contemplation into the knitting. As she loves each stitch into being she is creating a physical prayer and blessing for another. So, the next time you pick up some yarn and needles think about the connection you have to the God who is Creator. As you create think about how you yourself are connected to God and become a partner with God in creation. with Brandt until his university days. He performed and travelled with the Hamburg Youth Orchestra, the Duesseldorfer Aerzte Orchestra and the German Youth Orchestra. Cow and Sow's viola and piano duets include works by Schubert, Bach, Rachmaninov, Faure and Brahms, as well as contemporary composers such as Rolph Lovland.
