Sports Close The Sunderland goalie works to clear the puck before the Blyth PeeWee can poke it into the net. The two teams met in their OMHA final series in Blyth on Sunday afternoon. It didn't go well for the host team as they lost this one 7-5. The loss was even more unfortunate as it was the second in this best of five series. The Blyth squad was defeated the previous day in Sunderland. Game three will be in Sunderland Saturday, with hopefully game four in Blyth on Sunday. (Vicky Bremner photo) PeeWees need win to stay in game On March 11 and 12 the Wingham Curling Club hosted the Ontario Curling Association - Region 4 senior mixed and mixed playoffs. In the Senior mixed, Brian Moore's rink from Niagara Falls went undefeated to win the A side while Gary Stecyk from Beach Grove won the B side. In the mixed playoffs it was David Lynn of St. Marys going undefeated to win the A side with Wayne Tuck of Brant the winner of the B. These four winners advance to Ontario playdowns to be held in Orangeville. *** In ladies Tuesday night action it was Amy Miller 8, Kayla Bishop 2; Debbie Gammie 8, Marg Moffat 3 and Joyce Vincent, the winner over Jen Elston in an extra end. *** Tuesday competitive league regular season is over and the playoffs are underway with some rather one-sided scores. The winners last week were the rinks of Elston, Adams, Burke and Cottrill with teams on the losing side being Fitch, Aart Devos, Bill Devos, and John Dailleboust. Next week the two undefeated teams Shawn Cottrill and Steve Burke will fight it out for the ,playoff championship. May the best team win! *** In the Thursday family league, the Millers came up with two wins as Doug Miller defeated Cole McDonald 7-4 and Elliott Miller downed Shawn Cottrill 10-7. There will be two six-end games open to any combination of men and women, experienced or novice. Get a team together and join in the fun for this great cause. *** The club has a gourmet fundraising dinner on Saturday, April 8 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available from any director or at the clubhouse. *** The country mixed bonspiel was held on March 18. Rock Talk - By Bill Johnston The Blyth Bulldogs have started their battle for the Ontario crown against a formidable team from Sunderland. Game one, in a best three of five, took place in Sunderland on Saturday. The Dogs opened the scoring in the first on a goal by Kirby Cook, assisted by Tyler Stevenson and Adam Cronin. Cronin then capitalized on a power play and, unassisted, snapped one past the opposing net minder to lengthen the score to 2-0. The Sunderland Wings poked one past the Dog keeper. Scoring was finished in the second period on a hard-earned goal by Stevenson to extend Blyth's lead 3- 1. Game two was held in Blyth on Sunday, with a great home cheering squad. The boys hopped on the scoreboard early with a goal by Cook, assisted by Stevenson and Cronin. Less than a minute later Sunderland tied up the score, then jumped ahead with a second goal only 56 seconds later. Blyth fought back with a goal scored by Matt Chalmers, assisted by Ryan Sjaarda and Matt Popp. With 4:29 left on the clock in the first, Cronin fired another shot in, assisted by Trevor Raynard to bump Blyth ahead 3-2.
