The Tinatt eidable In 8ittilroatling,
Some railroad accidents, and happily they
are very rare, may be rightly described as
unavoadeblo, and the public, whether it will
or not, meet arpeot its share ot them, with.
out recourse.. To wholly avoid smolt aoei.
dente, the operations of the railroads would
have to be die -continued, and it would be
equally reasorable to suggest that the tray
citing public night themeolvea avoid them
by ceasing travelling.
The aooidett of the other morning upon
theErleRailrcadbelonge to this class of nal
-
dente, A rock fell in the night during a
great storm end landed upon the east-
bound track of the railroad. A freight
train name along, struck it, and was de-
railed, the engine falling across the adjoining
track. A passenger train was due at the mo-
ment, and there was no time to give it the
customary warning of the wreck snits path.
Itwentdown an enbankment, with loss
of life and loss of property. Here is a
casualty whereof the blame may not be
justly laid at the door of the company. It
cannot be alleged that, upon the .strictest
reading of the laws which are supposed to
govern good railroading, the company could
have prevented it. The track was in good
order. The machinery was sound. The
trains were running upon regular orders,
and in conformity with all the regulations

videntmanaggement could have avoided.
It is possible that a railroad should so
police and scrutinize its roadway at all times
that it should detect, and be required to de-
tect, and inetantlyremove, or guard against,
an obstacle precipitated thereby the unfore-
seen fury of the elements. It is true that
the immediate hiisidee by which the track
runs should be denuded as completely as
possible of all objects liable to be dislodged.
Under conditions of storm and rainfall, or
otherwise, every declivity that gives upon a
railroad may have some rock or• boulder
liable to be detached and sent down upon
the track beneath. To a certain extent,
danger of this kind may be avoided, and we
believe that upon the Erie Railroad, as up-
on other great railroads, nothing has been
spared to reduce the danger from this source
to a minimum.
It is not to be required of a railroad that it
shall take into ifa.proteotive scrutiny whole
ranges of mountains, any thanthat it
should bnilda house over the entire length of
its line. The one would be as unreasonable as
the other, and it ought, in all fairness to
intelligent railaoad management, to be re-
cognized that there is a point at which the
actual responsibility for aocidents should
cease. And it may be added that there is
nothing that is more easy to determine than
the point at which railroad responsibility
should end. It may be discerned by the
simplest' application of, common sense.
Why can not we be content to live simply,
preferring to be unnoticed, knowing that
what brings happiness is not praise, nor con-
spicuousness, nor elevation to office, but a
clean ,conscience and a restful spirit. Be
modest and serviceable, Y ou may never be
called to office, but you will surely b: call-
ed to better service of your fellow -men, and
this is the only greatness.

The destruction of forests has proceeded
so rapidly in Prussia of late years that the
