Youth advisory groups focus on teens at local libraries It is the mission of Huron County Library to meet the informational, educational and recreational needs of the residents of Huron County. Traditionally, it has been successful in doing s9 for children, adults and seniors. However, the teenage population has received less attention than it deserves. That is why the Seaforth and Brussels Branch Libraries are proud to announce that they will each be starting a Youth Advisory Group. The purpose of these volunteer groups of teens age 12-19 will be to assist with the improvement and Hoping you will enjoy and use some of the recipes I will be giving each month. They have all been tested by me in my home, and will come from many sources. They are easy family food that teenagers and parents will enjoy. MAPLE BUTTER TARTS Pastry: 2/3 cup soft shortening 2 cups flour 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 tsp salt 1 egg beaten with 2 tbsp milk Cut shortening into dry ingredients. With a fork lightly mix in egg and milk. Wrap and chill at least one hour. Roll out and cut to fit 3 - 4" tart tins. Cover and refrigerate. Filling for tarts: 2 tbsp butter 1 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup maple syrup plus 2 tbsp 1/2 cup currants 2 eggs beaten 1/2 tsp vanilla In a medium bowl beat butter, brown sugar, maple syrup and vanilla. Place currants in a small pan; cover with 1" of water. Bring to a boil and drain. Immediately add currants to sugar mixture and stir to melt butter. Whisk in beaten, eggs and divide' promotion of library services to teenagers in the community. Its creation indicates to the teenage residents of Seaforth, Brussels and area a commitment to hearing their opinions and supporting their needs. The groups will advise on such areas as the creation of a teen website for Huron County Library, teen area and collections recommendations, program ideas, and suggestions for overall service to teenagers. The groups will meet once a month for 10 months of the year. These volunteer hours can be used towards high school graduation between tart shells filling each 3/4 full. Bake 12 - 15 minutes or until pastry is golden brown and tops are still a bit jiggly in the centre. Cool completely in pan before removing. If tarts have boiled over gently run a curved grapefruit knife under each tart. Cool completely. Makes 12 tarts. MAPLE BAKED CHICKEN 3 lbs chicken, cut into pieces 4 tbsp melted butter 1/2 tsp grated lemon peel 1/2 cup pure maple syrup a few shakes salt and pepper 2 tsp lemon juice 1/4 cup chopped nuts (optional) Place chicken in shallow baking pan. Combine remaining ingredients and pour over chicken. Bake uncovered 50 - 60 minutes in 400°F oven basting every 20 minutes. MAPLE CANDIED SWEET POTATOES 3 lbs peeled sweet potatoes 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 2 tbsp butter Cook sweet potatoes until barely tender. Cut into 1" slices. In a saucepan combine syrup, brown sugar, butter and a shake of salt. Bring to a boil. Simmer 5 minutes. Place potatoes in 11"x7" baking pan. Spoon syrup mixture over potato slices to coat. Bake uncovered at 350°F for 30 minutes basting potatoes frequently. requirements, as participating in a Youth Advisory Group provides a valuable service to the library and the teens who use it.
