PAGE 20. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2006. Challenge: Conflicting schedules leave no time to enjoy meals together as a family Solution: Studies show that eating family meals together is associated with healthy eating patterns, such as eating more fruits and vegetables, more fibre and less fat. Eating together also helps develop healthy food habits in children particularly when parents are good role models. While it's hard to make family meals happen all the time — the ideas below will help your family eat well together as often as possible. • Be flexible — Try to schedule activities so you have some time everyday to eat together. You might have to be more flexible with your main meal and vary it according to daily activities. For example, dinner might be at 5:00 p.m. one night and 7:00 p.m. another night. • Make nutritious snacks available — Not everyone can wait for the family meal. Healthy snacks can contribute to daily nutrient intakes. Prepare raw vegetables or fruit plates ahead of time and keep in the fridge for after school or after work snacks. Keep snacks in the car or in your bag to avoid the vending machines and fast food stops. Handy snacks include: trail mix made with dry cereal, nuts, and dried fruit; whole-grain or graham crackers; yogurt and cheese; individual containers of fruit; water bottles and juice boxes. • Keep track of winning meals. Mark up your cookbooks with comments like, "too much work" or "tastes amazing!" or any additions/substitutions that worked for a recipe. Make notes on every recipe you try so you know what you and your family's reaction to it was. ELLIOTT NIXON INSURANCE BROKERS INC. 4 Generations BLYTH, ON R. John Elliott Res. Christians around the world and at home will be focusing on the country of South Africa during the annual World Day of Prayer service, held at local churches on March 3. Everyone is invited to join in this worldwide event by attending a service at Blyth Trinity Anglican Church, and the Mennonite Church of Brussels at 7:30 p.m. Services will also be held at the United Church in Belgrave at 2 p.m., and • Londesborough United Church at 1:30 p.m. This year's World Day of Prayer service, written by the women of South Africa, reflects on the theme "Signs of the Times." The women of South Africa greet all those participating in this service by saying "Molweno," "Dumelang" and "Goeiedag" which means "Good day!" South Africans are proud of being called a rainbow nation, a name coined by retired archbishop and Nobel Prize winner Desmond Tutu to celebrate the country's many colours, races and culture. Despite division, injustice and suffering, the people of South Africa have determined to move beyond their history of four decades of oppression and apartheid. However, the country is still experiencing change and facing challenge as it works for transformation. There are issues of drought, pollution, violence, drug trafficking, unemployment, poverty, and - possibly the most debilitating of all - the continuing cost of HIV/AIDS. Participants attending the World Day of Prayer will not only be learning more about this country and its unique culture and heritage, but will also be joining Christians in More than 170 countries around the world and 2,000 communities across Canada who will gather together to pray and act in solidarity with the people of South Africa. The World Day of Prayer has its roots in an ecumenical day of prayer organized by women in Canada and the United States in 1920. This event became the international World Day of Prayer in 1922, and Christians around the world began celebrating this event on the first Friday of March. In Canada, the World Day of Prayer is co-ordinated by the Women's Inter-Church Council of Canada. Locally, the co-ordinating group has representation from several different churches. The service at the Trinity Anglican Church in Blyth will feature special music by Cheryl Cronin and Avon Corned and the speaker will be Rev. John Kuperus, pastor at Christian Reformed Church.
