Sports Wingham Juvies lead series by 2 The save The Brussels PeeWee goalie gives his all to make the save, but despite the team's best efforts it was one in the loss column this time. The team was defeated by Drayton at home on The Wingham Juveniles are up two to zero in their WOAA final series with Lucknow. On Friday night after a scoreless first period Wingham took a 1-0 lead early in the second period as Cory MacDonald scored with help from Kirk Stewart. Lucknow scored two goals in 33 seconds shortly after. However Stewart tied it with help from Greg Tiffin and C. MacDonald, then Brendan Chester earned the lead before the end of the period with the assist going to C. MacDonald.. - After mostly a penalty-free game •the whistle came out in the third with Wingham finding themselves shorthanded three times in a five- minute span. Lucknow took advantage and tied the game forcing overtime. This was short however, as Xavier O'Krafka scored with help from Brendan Blake to seal a 4- 3 Wingham victory. On Sunday evening Wingham came out flying and handed Lucknow a 7-0 defeat. O'Krafka scored two with singles going to C. MacDonald, Kris MacDonald, Stewart, Adam MacDonald and Charles Ireland. Assists were earned by Stewart, Tiffin with two, Brett McPherson with two, Blake with three, A. MacDonald with three and Chester. Jamael Jacklin earned the shutout in the Wingham net. Wingham will try to cinch -the series Friday night in Lucknow at 8:30 p.m. Should game four be necessary it would be at 6 p.m. on Saturday in Wingham with game five if necessary going Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in Lucknow. Saturday. (Vicky Bremner photo) Pr Blyth Atom Girls tie Goderich Blyth Skating Club Talent Showcase On Saturday, Feb. 18 the Blyth Atom Girls hockey team travelled to Goderich. The home team opened the scoring. Two minutes later Blyth tied it up with an unassisted goal by Lexi Smith. Blyth continued to apply pressure with forwards Courtney Middegaal and Jordan Teed skating hard. Brussels native Brooke Wheeler was outstanding coming up with some big saves for the Colgate Raiders during a hockey game against Dartmouth on Friday, Feb. 17. Wheeler made 11 total stops, as the shots were lopsided in favour of Dartmouth. The Raiders were renewed in the second stanza, generating more offence, as shots were slanted in favour of Colgate, 13-9. Colgate knotted the score at one apiece with a power-play. Dartmouth had a 13-8 shot The Blyth Atoms began their first playoff series on a positive note with a 6-3 victory over Wallace in Kurtzville Feb. 19. Alex Peters led the scoring with a hattrick plus two. He began his onslaught on the Wallace net late in the first with his team down by two. Shelsie Popp handed off to Matt VanWyk who set up Peters for Blyth's first goal. Then with 24 seconds remaining before the buzzer, Peters skated in alone to tie it. Wallace took the lead again in the second and held on through the period. "The third was Blyth's all the way, however, with them shutting -down their hosts and adding four. The two Goderich scored first in the second period. Blyth would not give up however. Rebecca Chalmers scored with 30 seconds left in the second, with assists going to Kayla Dale and Chloe Middegaal. The strong defence of Laura Higgins, Kelsey Kerr, MacKenzie McGavin and Shelsie Popp were kept busy with Goderich's many advantage however, in the third which they were able to turn into a 2- 1 lead. Colgate falls to 10-12-7 overall and 7-7-3 in the ECACHL, while Dartmouth improves to 10-10- 4 and 7-7-3 in the conference. Harvard University shutout Colgate 3-0 on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Bright Hockey Centre. Seniors led Harvard appropriately on Harvard's senior day. Shots were in favour of Harvard 20-7 in the first period, 22-10 in the second and 10-8 in the third. Wheeler made 49 saves as Colgate fell to 10-13-7 and 7-8-3 in the were from Peters, with assists going to Popp and Mike VanWyk. The fifth Blyth goal came from Mike VanWyk with helpers from his brother Matt and Peters. The final Blyth goals was scored late in the period by Peters, unassisted. scoring attempts.
