It's a long way from enforcement
to the ministry, but that path has led
Sandra Cable to Brussels.
As a lay pastoral minister in
training, the Forest resident is the
new spiritual leader for the members
of BrusselS and Ethel United
Churches.
Cable was working as an
enforcement officer for the Ministry
of the Attorney General when a
tragic experience altered the_course
of her life.
"A lot of things promped the
change. I had always been involved
in church as a Sunday school
teacher, superintendent and serving
on church boards, but I knew there
was something more. In my personal
life I had to find the answers to some
questions."
And then a young man that Cable
had been sent to evict, committed
suicide while she was in the
driveway of his home. "I needed
answers as to why."
At her daughter's suggestions she
began to take courses in pschology
and sociology, eventually receiving a
diploma from Lambton College.
She then began looking at
newspaper ads to see where -she
could fit in with these new skills. "I
looked at where I could go and it
turned out I couldn't go anywhere."
After deep consideration and
prayer, she said, she recognized that
she was approaching the issue
incorrectly. "I needed to look at my
gifts, what I had to offer."
Becoming a lay minister involved
a number of interviews with
churches and the United Church
conference. Once accepted, she had
to find a church. "Hopefully there is
a church that wants someone
learning and growing with them.
That brought me here so I'm now
sharing God's work with the people
of Brussels and Ethel.
The process for the congregations
was to seek permission of the
Presbytery to have a student
minister.
Cable is guided by an educational
supervisor and team who provide
input on the what gifts she has that
need to be strengthened.
One of the strengths she feels she
does bring to the job is an ability to
balance things. She describes
herself as a people person and says
she enjoys making new
acquaintances. "I also care for
people. I have empathy for them and
their situations. can bring my
experiences in to help people and
learn."
She respects honesty and likes to
make the message she delivers
relevant to what is happening to the
congregation members at that time.
Having left a son, two daughters
and their families, which include six
grandchildren in Forest and London,
Cable said she expects to retire back
there in the future. For the present,
however, she has found a new home
in Brussels.
"I like the church and the
community. I have found the people
to be very caring of their church and
this lovely manse."
She is equally satisfied with her
new career path. "I do not consider
what I'm doing now a job. I love the
work I'm doing in the ministry."
