(Vicky Bremner photo) Local Tykes face off The Saugeen Maitland AA Midget girls travelled to Waterloo for a mid- week game on Thursday, Jan. 19. Although they had a slow start, and found themselves down two goals in the first five minutes, they fought back to win 3-2. Kendall Whitfield opened the scoring for the Lightning after receiving a pass from Allison Quennell in the last minute of the first period. The only goal in the second period also came off the -stick of Whitfield, assisted by linemates Quennell and Carmen Carnochan. The defence played a much stronger second period, not allowing any shots on -net. Juniof Brook Wheeler, Brussels, of the Colgate women's ice hockey team has been named ECAC Hockey League Goaltender of the Week for the week ending Jan. 22, it was announced by the league office Jan. 23. Wheeler had the game of a lifetime on Saturday against number three St. Lawrence when the Raiders shocked the Saints with a 3-0 shutout. She made 51 saves, a career- high, and did not allow a goal enroute to the biggest upset of the weekend. It was Wheeler's first appearance The Lightning took the lead in the third period on a goal by a determined Erin Burns. Brittney Peters earned the helper. The Saugeen Maitland girls outshot Waterloo 31-6. The girls played two games on home ice in Howick on the weekend. On Saturday, the Lightning played a great game against Stratford, defeating the , Aces 4-0. Sydney Brown put up a wall, as she turned away every shot that came her way. Peters opened the scoring with a shot from the blue line. Michelle Kittel put her name on the score sheet after receiving a pass from Laurie Sinclair and Kassie Avery. between the pipes since the Jan. 7 game against Harvard. Her 51 saves made her eligible for Colgate's 50- Save Club, a club that had only two members: Rebecca Lahar ('05) and Jen ,„ Buck ('99) of "r:- BROOK WHEELER the Division III era. Wheeler was also named the Quennell dumped one in the net on a wrap-around shot which was assisted by Burns. Quennell then returned the faVour, as she passed the puck to Burns who scored the fourth goal. The outcome was not as favourable for the Lightning on Sunday, as the girls had one goal called back on them and lost 2-1 against the Bluewater Hawks. Janette Hammell scored the goal for Saugeen Maitland with the assist going to Camochan. The girls will travel lo Sarnia next Saturday and then return to Howick on Feb. 4 to -face the Kitchener Rangers. ECACHL Goaltender of the Week on Nov. 7, after going 2-0-0 against Brown (3-0) and Yale (4-2). Teammate Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) earned a spot on the ECACHL honour roll for her two points over the weekend. Hunt scored the game- winning short-handed goal against the Saints and assisted on the next goal. Colgate continues its six-game road swing with a trip to New England this weekend. The Raiders will take on Yale on Friday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m., and will face Brown on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 4 p.m. Wheeler goalie of the week The Blyth Tyke I team travelled to Brussels for a Saturday morning game. Blyth was a little slow off the bat and let Delayna Smith from Brussels squeak one past Amy Boyce, Blyth's netminder. This goal would go unanswered by Blyth as Hunter Dale put one in the net for the Bulldogs. It was a well-matched game with no other goals being scored, but lots of chances by both teams. The second game of the weekend There was end-to-end action at the Blyth Mites hockey game against Lucknow this weekend. Drew Van Wyk had a high tally of goals with five. Other goal scorers for Blyth were Jared Shearer. and Carson Richmond. There Was excellent defense and net minding by goalie McKayla Rodgers who had three great saves. There was strong forward skating by all but strong goal-tending prevented any more Blyth goals. Both Richmond and Shearer were stopped twice on breakaways. Good fun was had by all, with Novices enjoy Two Blyth Novices scored hattricks on the way to helping their team to a 10-3 win over Elma Logan at home Jan. 19. The visitors got the scoring started mid-way through the first period. Blyth's Dustin Pennington, with a hand off from Brendan Hallahan, tied it minutes later. Before the visitors had time to think about what happened, Mackenzie Nesbitt passed to Ashley Higgins who set up the play for Curtis Raynard to score and put Blyth ahead. Then with just over a minute left in the period, Nesbitt slipped the puck to Pennington who increased Blyth's lead by two. Elma Logan cut the lead to one in the second, before Raynard, assisted by Pennington gave his team the edge back. Elma Logan wasn't ready to hand the game over yet, and with 50 seconds remaining in the period, pulled back within one. Blyth owned the third period, however, shutting down the homeside while scoring six. was played on Sunday afternoon against Listowel. Blyth. played a good game with lots of chances from everyone. This was another well- matched game. Scoring for Blyth were Samantha Kerr assisted by Hunter Dale, Drew Bromley, Justin Rodger and Dale. Listowel scored six goals making the score 6-4 for Listowel. Playing an excellent game between the pipes was Cody Treble. great improvement in skating as the season goes on. The second game for the Mites was against Goderich. Both Blyth goals were scored by Shearer. Strong attempts in net were made by all as the puck seemed to like the Blyth end of the ice much better. Everyone took their turn in net as to try and keep the puck out. Blyth was stopped on a few breakaways of their own, but the high scoring Goderich team worked Blyth's defense and goalie most of the game. Great attitudes with lots of fun still made for smiles by all at the end. huge victory Pennington completed his hattrick, plus one, while Raynard also netted a hattrick with an unassisted goal. Other goalscorers were Ashley Higgins with two and Dustin Treble. Third-period assists went to Josh Van Soest with two, Connor Rodger, Raynard and Pennington. The final score was 10-3. Big game for Peters, VanWyks It was a huge night for Alex Peters and the VanWyk brothers when the Blyth-Atom Reps took on Wallace Jan. 16 at home. Peters started the triple threat's scoring with an unassisted goal in the first period. Wallace put the scare in Blyth taking a 3-I lead into the second. Peters, with help from Mike and Matt VanWyk pulled the hosts Continued on page 14 Atom The Blyth Atom Girls played host to Goderich on Saturday, Jan. 21. Blyth opened the scoring five minutes into the game on- an unassisted goal by Shelsie Popp. Two-and-a-half minutes later Blyth scored again when Lexi Smith picked up the rebound by Popp. Forwards Courtney Middegaal, Jordan Teed, Nicole Middegaal, The Blyth Atoms played in the Mildmay Broomball Tournament this past weekend. Mildmay had the only other Atom team so they played a two-game playoff. In the first game, Jordan Deboer played net. Carlene Bremner and Brennan Kolkman were good on defence. Drew Reinink and Curtis Weber got some good, shots away but no goals were scored. Near the end of the game, brother and sister, Zack and Brooklyn Berwick, teamed up to score the first goal. Zack scored another shortly thereafter to give Blyth a 2 - 1 win. In the second game, it was pretty Dynamite suffers first loss Continued from page 8 After the very tiring game against Innisfil, the Dynamite met up with the well-rested Mildmay Greenhawks. For the first time this season the Dynamite suffered a loss of 3-1 and came home with the silver medal. Scoring the lone goal was Roetcisoender. Every player on the Dynamite team came out and gave it their all this past weekend and are tcow ready to head the Junior Provincials on Feb. 10, 11 and 12. Kayla Dale and Chloe Middegaal had many scoring chances due to their hard work in front of the opponent's net. Scoring in the second for Blyth was Becca Chalmers, assisted by Popp. The defence of Mackenzie McGavin and Kelsey Kerr worked tirelessly keeping the scoring chances for Goderich at a minimum. even again. Late in the game, Kolkman ran away with the game, scoring three times each on a breakaway. With two wins in two games the Blyth Atom team brought home the gold from the Mildmay Tournament. Goderich put their mark on the board in the third scoring two goals.- Then Chalmers scored her second of the game assisted by Laura Higgins. With less than three minutes left in the game Popp scored her second unassisted goal. Justine Reid was solid in net for Blyth. The next game is Saturday, Jan. 28 in Walkerton. They travel t) Mildmay, again, next Sunday, for the final game to wrap up their season. The following weekend, there will be a fun exhibition game when they challenge their Moms on the ice, at the end of their final practice. • Mites play Lucknow Girls host Goderich -Atoms get tournament gold
