Sports Rollers play in tourney Old versus new The past met the present at the Brussels arena on Friday night as the 'old' Crusaders faced off against the 'youngsters' in an entertaining game. The final was 4-3 for the more experienced fellows. (Vicky Bremner photo) Gamblers win silver The Blyth Gamblers Bantam Girls played in the Mildmay broomball tournament this past weekend. Their first game was against Seaforth/Palmerston. Courtney Bos played net for the tournament. At the end of the first half, Blyth found themselves down by a goal from a shot into the top corner. Seaforth/ Palmerston scored again in the second period from a scramble in front of the Gamblers net. The Gamblers got one back through a scramble in front of the Seaforth/Palmerston net when Karly Howard got a pass to Coreena Otten who stuffed it into the net. But the strong Seaforth/Palmerston team held the off and Blyth lost 2-1. In the second game, it was the Blyth Gamblers versus the Blyth Boomers. It was an evenly- matched game with both teams getting some chances. Katelyn Roetcisoender scored for the Boomers in the first half to put them ahead. The Gamblers couldn't get one past Amy Root in the Boomers net. The single goal held and the Gamblers lost 1-0. This past weekend the Blyth PeeWee Dynamite travelled to Mildmay to play in Mildrpay's annual junior broomball tournament. The Dynamites beat their first opponents, Palmerston by a score of 3-2. Goaltender, Tyler Hallahan was challenged early and made many key saves to keep the opposition to just two goals. Scoring for the Dynamite was Nadine Otten with one and Greg Roetcisoender with two. Next up was the Mildmay Redhawks who kept the Dynamite scoreless in regular play. Hallahan recorded another shutout and the In their third game, the Gamblers were against the Blyth Boomers again. This game turned into a real battle with neither team backing down. With no score in regular time, they went into overtime. Kim Hogersvorst saved the game making a stop while sliding into the Gambler net. With the first overtime period almost over, Niki Beyersbergen connected with Karly Howard and Howard put it away to give the Gamblers the win. This win put them in the final against Seaforth/Palmerston who hadn't lost all weekend. Seaforth/Palmerston scored late in the first half to take the lead. The girls put forth a strong effort, but by the second half they looked a little tired. They had some chances but failed to score. The Gamblers took the loss and settled for bringing home the silver from the Mildmay Tournament. Next Sunday, the Gamblers head to Palmerston • for their last scheduled game before heading to Lefroy Feb. 10 for the final Ontario broomball tournament that wraps up the season. two teams headed into overtime. Finally after 20 minutes Roetcisoender found the back of the net to advance the team to the semi- finals. The Dynamite faced -a strong Innisfil team which also kept them scoreless in regular play. Hallahan had another outstanding game in net, keeping Innisfil off the scoreboard. • The Dynamite played another long game with over 20 minutes of overtime. Finally in the last minutes of double overtime, Roetcisoender scored to send the team to the championship game. Continued on page 9 Mildmay was host to a broomball tournament held Jan. 21 and 22, for the Atom, PeeWee, Bantam and Midget level. The Blyth Rollers were scheduled to play at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. Due to the poor road conditions many players were late getting to the arena, so several of the players filled in the bench after the starting whistle blew. The Rollers first opponents were the Mildmay Green Hawks. This team was very strong and kept digging for the ball and intercepting Blyth passes. Emily Uyl started out covering the net for the Rollers and made some great saves before being replaced by Murray Dale. Mildmay scored with a minute and a half left in the first period, from a nice pass around the corner of the net. In the second period Mildmay had a breakaway and scored. The Green Hawks scored again when the ball rolled through several players and crossed the goal line. Mill:1May won this game 3-0. The next game was played against Mildmay was host to a broomball tournament Jan. 21 and 22. The Blyth Kings Bantam boys played hard and brought home the gold medal. The Kings' first game was played at the Belmore arena against Mildmay, on Saturday, Jan. 21. This- was a game of many penalties, with Mildmay getting the- first one and Blyth the next three. Assistant Captain Daniel Dery scored in the first period after taking a hard shot to the top of the Mildmay net. In the second period with only three minutes left in the game, Mildmay scored during a powerplay. This put the game into overtime. Mildmay scored to win 2-1. Kurtis Kolkman won the title Man of the Match for his excellent defensive efforts. Game two was ' played at the Mildmay arena Saturday night, against Innisfil. With just over eight minutes left in the first period, Dane Nickel made a direct pass to Brent Drost who picked it up and shot the ball into the net for the Kings' first goal. Brandon Haakers passed the ball up the ice, Dery picked up the pass and scored. The Kings received two penalties but were successful in killing the penalties and didn't allow the opposition to score. This was a 2-0 win for Blyth and a shutout for Blyth's goalie Derek Logtenberg. The title Man of the Match was given to two brothers, Chad and Kurtis Gorel. • The third game was played on Jan. 22 against the same team. This was a different game as Innisfil played a very strong game. There were scoring opportunities from both teams, but there was no score at the end of the second period, even though there was a lot of scrambling in front of the Innisfil net during the last minute of the game. This was the second tournament shutout for Logtenberg. During the first shift of overtime, Innisfil on Saturday afternoon. Dale suited up in the goalie gear for the Rollers and made•some great plays to keep the Rollers in the game. In spite of all of the effort put into making good passes and digging for the ball, neither team scored in the first period. Innisfil received a penalty halfway through the second period, but unfortunately so did the Rollers a few seconds later, so lost their powerplay advantage. Blyth was digging to get the ball out of their end when the ball was passed from behind the net and Innisfil intercepted the pass. After getting control of the ball, they took a shot on the net and scored. Blyth battled back and had a few breakaways, but Innisfil put a stop each attempt to score. This was an extremely close game, but Innisfil won 1-0. In the consolation round the Rollers met up with Seaforth on Sunday, Jan. 22. Uyl suited up in the goalie gear for Blyth. She made some good plays throughout the game. Dery passed the ball_to Jordon Rinn who tapped the ball which then rolled over the goal line. This victory allowed the Kings to play in the championship match later in the day. Tristan Miltenberg Wen the title, Man of the Match. - The championship game was held Sunday afternoon at 4:40 p.m. This tout the Kings playing against the Seaforth Spitfires. This was a very closely-matched game, and both teams put forth an excellent effort. There was no score at the end of the first period. Seaforth received a penalty, but Blyth was unable to score on the powerplay. There was no score at the end of the second period so it was another shutout for Logtenberg, who made countless saves to keep the Kings in the game. Fans and parents were on the edge of their seats as Blyth and Seaforth went into overtime play. Soon Drayson Nairn made a pass to Nickel for the winning goal. Nairn was named Man of the Match. The Kings won the Gold medal and also received a trophy and banner that will be displayed in the Blyth arena. The Kings worked hard as a team to win this tournament and can be proud to bring home the gold. Prior to the weekend tournament the Kings travelled to Seaforth on Jan. 19 to play the Spitfires. Seaforth received the first goal of the game during the first period, after the ball rolled off the goalie's glove and over the goal line. Blyth had some breakaways, but they were intercepted by Seaforth's strong defence. Just before the first period was over there was some scrambling in front of the Blyth net. As Blyth tried to draw the ball away from the net, it accidentally crossed the line. - Seaforth scored on a breakaway in the second period. Blyth's forward Derek DeBoer had a breakaway and scored a goal for the Rollers. This was the Rollers' first goal of the season, so the coaches, ...players and parents were very excited. This goal gave the Rollers the boost they needed and they ended the game playing very strongly with several scoring opportunities. The final score was 3-1 for Seaforth. The Rollers worked hard as a team during this tournament. After this final game slushies were enjoyed by all to celebrate the goal and the team's strong efforts. Seaforth was first to score when the Kings left a Seaforth player uncovered in front of Blyth's net. Seaforth was ahead 1-0 at the end of the first period. Brett Vanneste passed the ball to Nickel for the tie goal. At the end of the second period the game was still tied, so overtime was played. Rinn broke the tie and scored after a pass from Dery. With only five seconds of ice time left, Drost scored on a breakaway. The final score was 3-1 for Blyth. The Man of the Match title was given to two players: Brandon Haakers and Alex Hogan.
