Welcome back to Sandra Josling who enjoyed a working holiday by riding along in the big truck with Jim to Florida. The general meeting for January is Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 8 p.m. All Comrades can attend the general meeting and let their voices be heard. New ideas for fundraising are always appreciated as are members' opinions on the running of the Branch. Come out and support the executive. Membership is very important and numbers have dropped for many reasons. With the majority of veterans mostly over the age of 75, the commitment to their aid will lessen, but not the commitment to the community. There are many youth and senior programs that the Legion is involved in. To build and keep our ties strong we need to also build our own membership. Joining the Legion is no different than joining the Lions, Optimists or Kinsmen. All groups are working to support their community, but in the Legion's case, there is also a facility to maintain. The costs are helped because of the ability to rent the upstairs hall for meetings, smaller weddings and other events, but it is very under-utilized. Membership matters and so does the potential membership of relatives, friends, business associates and others who believe in what the Legion can do. A new member does not have to be serving in the Canadian Forces to be eligible, and they don't have to be affiliated with someone who has served in he Canadian Forces. You do have to be a Canadian citizen or Commonwealth subject. Here are six reasons why you should become a Legion member: to belong to a national organization that supports Canadian Veterans and promotes Remembrance, to support your community through Legion programs and activities, for friendship and recreation, to expand your skills and talents by participating in sports, public speaking, helping seniors, leadership, youth development and social and other activities, to have access to a great list of discounted products and service through the Legion Members Benefit Package and to receive Legion magazine six times a year. It's a new year and maybe time for you to join Brussels Branch 218. For more details call membership chairman John Harrison at 887-9865 or the Branch at 887-6562.
