PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JANUARY 19, 2006.
Sunshine on a January day is just
like a good gift. To waken, (after a
night shift), finding the sun
streaming in the window is almost
newsworthy and certainly worth
giving thanks. Once again, our
weather changes so much that it has
the ability to swing a mood and fill
the silent thoughts with only good
things.
Maybe it's the new year, maybe
it's the election next week or maybe

The Brussels Variety has a new
owner.
Tom Kim of Hamilton has taken
over the business from Ruth Lowe,
who is going to continue working at
the store and Anne Bosman.
The 24-year-old Kim said he has
worked in his family's Hamilton
it's too much television but
comforting thoughts are pretty hard
to find. The changing environment is
first on my mind, such a complicated
issue that one can easily think that
climate changes are just way too big
for us to worry about. Wrong. Back
to Grandma's advice to look after
yourself and your corner of the
world and things will be okay.
We all share this one world, at
present and just because someone is
a wasteful jerk — you don't have to
be. Yes we need to keep shutting off
wasteful lights. Yes we can wash
clothes with warm, even cold water
and yes, we can take shorter
showers.
The choices are ours today, not
real earth shakers that are enough to
wreck your day but they will make a
difference in the big picture called
life as we share the world's
resources.
variety store most of his life, and felt
the time had come to try a venture on
his own.
There will be few changes with the
new ownership, said Kim, who has
settled into his new home in
Brussels. "It will pretty much stay
the same as it has been, with all the
services, such as photo lab and
movie rentals."
The name and phone number will
Recycling and re-using remains an
important part of keeping land fill at
bay. It is almost anti-establishment
to resist buying. Give a more
conscious thought as you see all the
advertisements and displays and
think of the buying habits of
Grandma. She left you a good world.
The election issues are equally
concerning. Depending on your
point of view and life experience,
things can seem pretty complicated.
Once again, don't despair, keep it
simple and your responsibility says
you just need to look after your
corner while being aware of the
bigger world.
Watching and reading the news of
the world at times can be
overwhelming. Sometimes I wish
we didn't know all we do. But after
that selfish thought I realize that the
power of the world is established
usually by bullying.
remain the same as well.
Kim said, however, that he
welcomes input from customers,
particularly regarding any service or
stock they would like to see brought
to the Variety.
"We are interested in knowing
more about what the community
wants. If there are any special
requests we will do our best to try
and bring them in."
So we need to see clearly the
abuses, the inequality and the
absolute wrongs in our world. Then
our awareness is shared so that these
things are not allowed to continue
where we can have an influence.
So let the sunshine shift your
thoughts and help make it an even
better day. Perhaps it's just annual
report time.
The Boyntons are starting the new
year very well indeed.
Granddaughter Erin from downtown
Alberta has landed and all is well
with the world.
Oh yes, it's good of Jeff and
Nicole•to drop by as well. There is
nothing like a baby to change the
perspective of a day.
To the ladies of the Brussels
Variety — thank you for your service
to community and enjoy your
newfound leisure time. To the new
owners we look forward to getting to
know you. Welcome to Brussels.
Read that book — it too needs to
get done.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

• Recladding External Walls of Hospital
We are renovating! The older section of the
hospital built in 1964 requires recladding
to prevent moisture from collecting behind
the bricks, freezing and causing the bricks to
fall off. The project, which will be completed
in May 2006, involves installing an exterior
insulation system with a stucco appearance.
While the end result will be a great
improvement, the drilling will be noisy at
times. We appreciate your patience during this process and apologize
for any inconvenience.
• Hospital Auxiliary Fundraiser
The annual Hospital Auxiliary Tree of Lights, held November 27,
2005, was again well attended. Proceeds for this year's fundraiser will
be directed to equipment and assessment materials for Occupational
Therapy. To the Switchboard staff who sold tickets. Maintenance staff
for decorating the tree with lights, ALL our helpers and Santa, "Thank
you once again for your help". As always, "sincerest appreciation to
our community supporters for another successful season; our work
depends upon the generosity of others". Tree of Lights Chairman,
Frances R. Teatero.
• Seaforth Community Foundation
Many thanks to our community for your generous support of our
recent campaigns: summer, winter and Radiothon. Through your
generosity, we will reach our goal to purchase the CR Reader for
Diagnostic Imaging.
• Patient Lifts
The Seaforth hospital site has recently installed 4 ceiling lifts: 1 in the
ER Cast Room and 3 on the inpatient unit. This spring we will be
installing an additional 4 lifts on the inpatient unit. These lifts have
been funded through a provincal.Ministry of Health and Long Term
Care initiative to address patient and staff safety.
