HU director says
wash those veggies
"So what I'm hearing is that it's
on the consumer," concluded
Shewfelt.
By Bonnie Gropp
Citizen editor
Give those vegetables a good bath
before you eat them.
Huron County councillor Deb
Shewfelt questioned Penny Nelligan,
health unit director, at the Jan. 5
meeting of council about the
controls and regulations on the
production of vegetables.
Nelligan, who had given a brief
report regarding the recent bean
sprout salmonella outbreak said the
health unit is still recommending
that people not eat fresh bean sprouts
and that if they do, they blanche
them first.
Also, she said, they should never
be fed to children.
Asked by Shewfelt who controls
whether there may be bacteria on the
produce sold, Nelligan said that
bacteria can be particularly high
with natural and organic products
because, "quite frankly, there is
more manure used."
As there is no regulation in place
for monitoring, she said, "the issue is
to really clean them, and cook them
well."
