Sports Blyth loses close one Dec. 17 Christmas came early to the Brussels Novice team. They had the opportunity to play at the John Labatt Centre. Reece McArter, and Hayden TenPas had the chance to warm up with the London Knights. It was a great night and all, the kids will have a memory to last a lifetime. Thanks go to the Waechter family. Brussels Novices had their work cut out for them over the holidays. They played Blyth three times and it was great hockey. Dec. 23 Brussels won 4-3 and on Dec. 29 they played 'them again and Brussels came out on top 7-2. On Dec. 30 Brussels played at home against Harriston. It ended in a tie. The new year started out -with another game against Blyth. Brussels played hard, but it wasn't their night as they lost 5-3. Brussels played in the Lucknow tournament on Jan. 7. The first game was against Clifford. Brussels played well. After a well-deserved Christmas break, the Brussels Tykes played against the Blyth Its in Brussels Saturday, Jan. 7. Seth Nichol of Brussels, dressed in his buddy's goalie equipment, was ready for action. After six minutes of play back and forth, Owen Webster of Blyth scored the first goal of the game. Derrick Waechter and Nic Zwep of Brussels worked together to get the puck down in the Blyth end where their teammate Logan Kellington made a great shot and evened the score. Blyth was quick to retaliate, but Nichol saved the shots. At the end of the first period, Blyth's Dawson Coultes slipped one past the Brussels goalie to take a 2-1 lead. Delayna Smith of Brussels started out in centre at the beginning of the second period and made a great pass to Tiffany Dietner who passed to Mitchell Kellington started the scoring with Tim Waechter assisting. Ben Hruska scored the second with Kellington helping out. Then Hayden TenPas pocketed two with Lexi Smith having a great set up for both. Kai Heimstra took his turn whisking two by the Clifford goalie, with Logan Clark and Jason Baxter there to help out. Lastly, Wyatt Ducharme put in a quick one making the score 7-0. Matt McNichol got his first shutout in net. The second game was against Ripley. Brussels went out with great determination and never let down for a minute. They won 7-1. Goals were scored by Heimstra with a hattrick, Ducharme with a pair, TenPas and Waechter. The defence played a great game. McArter, Scott Baan, Colton Hastings and Scott Dolmage all got an assist. Taylor Higgins put all the fans and Wyatt Machan down at the Blyth end. Machan, Austin Johnston, and Dawson Peachy -managed to keep the action at the Blyth end with several shots on net, but the Blyth goalie managed to save them. At the very end of the second period, Kellington of Brussels slipped one past the Blyth goalie to take the game into the third at 2-2. Blyth's Colton Rodger slapped one in early in the third, making it 3- 2. Emily Mitchell had a break away, but the Blyth defence stopped her attempt to take the lead. Blyth player Brandon Marshall put two more goals in the Brussels net at the end of the third giving his team a 5-3 victory. Brussels is playing at the Bruce Williams Memorial Fun Days this weekend with three games scheduled. the coaches on the edge of their seats with two close calls at the net. Now with the pressure on Brussels was going for the A against. Minto (Harriston). The game started with Brussels scoring first with Hayden TenPas and Smith helping out. Waechter scored a hattrick with Kellington setting them up. Heimstra got two nice ones with Clark and Jason Baxter assisting. Hruska and Ducharme each put one in. Minto turned on the heat in the third period scoring four. Brussels wasn't done however as TenPas then Kellington scored. Minto came out again scoring three more to finish the game with a score of 9-7 for Brussels. McNichol played well and won himself a best overall goalie trophy. Mitchell Kellington won MVP. Coaches are Brian TenPas, Kevin Kellington, Bob Hruska and Ken Higgins. Blyth hosted Elma Logan on Jan. 8. A good game was played by all. Coultes scored the lone goal for Blyth. Shelby Higgins played a great game in net for Blyth. Curling results for first draw The winners of the Brussels Curling Club's first draw of the season are: first, 52 points, skip Doug Dale; vice Pauline Patterson; second Pegg-3, Aitchison; lead Laurie Campbell; second, 51 points, skip Steve Steiss; vice Ruth Bauer; second Catherine Thomet; lead Brian Warwick; third, 38 points, 44 rocks scored, skip Ernie Lewington; vice Dona Knight; second, Brenda McIntosh; lead Murray Hoover; fourth, 38 points, 42 rocks scored, skip Orval Bauer; vice Douwa Top; second Sheila Cousins; lead Debbie Campbell. There were mixed results for the Blyth Novice Reps as they finished the 2005 games. On Dec. 23' the squad hosted trussels and were edged 3-2. Curtis Raynard scored both Blyth goals with Josh VanSoest assisting on the first. Blyth was leading 2-0 until the end of the second period when Brussels pulled within one. Then while thwarting any further attempts on their own net, the visitors bulged the twine twice in the final period to take the game. Dalton Carey performed well in goal for Blyth. On Dec. 27 the Blyth team travelled to Clifford and glided to a 6-0 win. Raynard put Blyth on the board with an unassisted goal late in the first. Dustin Pennington opened the second period scoring. Two minutes later VanSoest skated in to score off a set up from Raynard. Two quick shots by Pennington netted him a hattrick before the buzzer. The score remained unchanged until the last three minutes of the third when Raynard lit the light for the final time. On Dec. 29 Raynard repeated his performance against Brussels in Blyth by scoring the hosts' only two goals of the game. Assists went to Pennington and Connor Rodger. The Brussels players were on their game and trounced the home team 7- 2. On Jan. 5 the Novices took on Brussels in an exciting,, action- packed game. The first goal was scored unassisted by Pennington, followed by, two more from Pennington, one assisted by Brendan Hallahan and one assisted by Plunkett bringing the score to 3-0 at the end of the first. The Blyth Atom Girls hockey team travelled to Walkerton on Sunday, Jan. 8. Kayla Dale opened the scoring at 4:34 of the first period with an unassisted goal. Walkerton battled back to score with just over a minute left in the first. Blyth's defence of Justine Reid, Kelsey Kerr and Laura Higgins was successful at keeping Walkerton's scoring chances to a minimum. -Forwards Courtney Middegaal, Nicole Middegaal, Jordan Teed, MacKenzie McGavin and Ashley Higgins worked hard the whole game never giving up. Shelsie Popp had unassisted goals in each of the second and third Brussels came back in the second with two goals but Raynard wrangled one into the net with the help of Ashley Higgins and Autumn Wightman. The third period started off with lots of action. Pennington scored with an assist from teammate VanSoest. Brussels was able to score with only 2:45 left in the game but it wasn't enough to beat the Novices who finished with a 5-3 victory. On Jan. 7 the Novices played three games at the Lucknow tournament. Game one against Minto ended with a 3-0 defeat. Facing the home team of Lucknow in game two didn't seem to intimidate the Novices as they sailed into a 9-1 victory. Two goals were scored in the first period by Pennington. The first was assisted by Treble and Hallahan and the second was assisted by Coultes. The second period had five points scored. The first was by Wightman, assisted by Pennington, tile second unassisted by Pennington, the third by Dylan Walton, assiswd by Pennington, the third by Pennington, assisted by Walton and Nesbitt and the final by Raynard assisted by Walton and Nesbitt bringing the score to 7-1. The third period brought in two more goals, one by Raynard, assisted by Treble and Hallahan and the second by Pennington, assisted by Walton and Nesbitt. As the visiting team once again, Blyth took on Wingham at their final game of the tournament. Wingham scored in the first and although Pennington managed a goal assisted by Raynard and Plunkett in the second, Wingham finished victorious with a score of 3-1. Goalie Dalton Carey won the trophy for most valuable player and Blyth was B runner up in the tournament. 1 periods. Rebecca Chalmers was between the pipes making many excellent saves.
