Those os us who haus . listened to
professional "temperance" orators will
remember that these glib and entltus
iritic gentlemen frequently retention,
amoral their "facts," that gine-tenths
of the insanity in the land is caused by
indulgence in into;cieating liquor: It le
ne': the purpose of this para raplt to
show that itis a good thing to drink
liquor—for itisnot—but simply to show
the:wildness oft the statement made by
hired orators. The mare who lives by
ab mos make it appear that there is
really some reason why he should
paid for talking. and when the paid
orator chances to be talking in the in-
terest of prohibition, he feels it to be

-his duty to paint whiskey and its con.
sequences in the moat hideous colors.
Of course be exaggerates; but then,

unfortunate people in the lunatic asy-

see how near the truth the orator

Wales from Dakota are frequent
nowa-days, Most Canadians who Kaye
been induced to settle there have a
Bard tale to tell when they commuui-
eate with their friends. Nearly all
the stories from that unhappy land are
like the one which au old Hastings
county boy tells in a letter to the
.ltellevjlle lntelligencer. The winter, he
:ifs, has been en extremely .hard one.
The blizzards have wrought ruin to
:many a farmer . Fuel is scarce and
dear. The second year he was there
the wheat crop averaged only fifteen
bushels to the acre. Dakota is fast
being found out. It is one of the best
parts of this continent to keep away
from. In addition to its natural dis-
advantages, the taxation of the terri-
tory isso great as to be a heavy burden
on the settler. What a different
present! A region where blizzards of
the Dakota brand are unknown, where
the soil rs of unequalled fertility, an3
where the chief evil to be borne is the
blighting influence of Reformism.
