—The editor of the Advocatc,Record-
er and Advertiser, of Mitchell, are hav-
ing a newspaper war. The "bilious
editor," of the Recorder, ax the Adver-
tiser calls him, is receiving rough treat-
ment at the hands of his opponents.
—A young man in Ingersoll has just
married a girl to whom he had engag-
ed himself sixteen separate and distinct
times. He heard that she was sitting
up nights counting the number of
"1r's"' and "S's" in his Letters and in-
dexing them.
—The many friends of Miss Chin;;,
daughter of Mr. Thos. Ching, of Lake
Road, Hay, will be sorry to hear that
she's been afflicted with paralysis in the
right side, which has completely laid
her up; the doctor says she is improv-
ing but very slowly.
—Mr. R. Welsh, of 2nd con. Us -
borne, writes to the Free Prese,London
and states that Misr Annie Welsh of
that place has just completed a quilt
containing four thousand nine hundred
and forty nine pieces, and another of
three thousand, three hundred and
seventy-five pieces. This is not up to
the one stated elsewhere in our col-
umns.
-The Exeter correspondent of the
Seaforth .i apositor, shakes mention of
a quilt, made by Mrs. Geo. Easter -
brook, which contains four thousand
three hutidredpieces, and is .,of the
ocean wave pattern. We make ment-
ion this week of a quilt belouging' to
'Mrs. John Priskator, of Stephen,which
contains. over six thousancl:pieces and

—The brood mares, purchased by
Snell cC White, for Mr. John Enright,
of'Dnndas, which wore to have been
.hipped on Thursday last, were not
shipped until! Saturday. There were

class.
--We have received the February
number of Cosmopoh'tan, an illustrated
monthly magazine, published by Soh -
light S. Field, park Row, New York,

—On Saturday next, Mr. George
Dew and Mr. C. Balsdon, of this vill-
age, leave for Walton, where they will
enter into a co -partnership, and will
open out a first class tailor shop. We
wish them every prosperity.
—On Wednesday Mr. Robert and
James Sanders purchased from. Mr.
William Simpson, of Biddulph, a fifty
acro farm in the township of Hay,
paying therefor a handsame sum. The
property is well situated and heavily
timbered.
—Our sanitary inspector put up no
less than 10 measle cards on Monday
last. This is a good number for one
clay, and we are safe in saying that
eight of every ten houses in our vill-
age is or has been placarded with the
"measle photo."
-A woman at Chambers, Neb., put
two dozen eggs in her bed, so they
would not freeze while she was absent
from home. When she returned she
was suddenly taken i11 with fever, and
was put to bed and lay three weeks.
The result of her sickness was 18 fine
chicks were hatched. Next!
—By some means, the railroad
bridge, which crosses the creek, which
runs through tle:farm of Mr. ;William
Routcliff, one and half reiies'south of
this village, got shifterl'to one side,and
when the.train-from the south, neared
it, the train was stopped, and the
bridge examined, but found to be all
safe. The men from this section of
the road at once repaired to the spot
and moved the rails, and it is now per-
fectly. safe. Itis supposed the frost
is'the cause of the bridge going to 'one
side.
—Mr. ¥utast, of the North End,
saw a robin one morning recently.

1- An interesting family arrived in
Boston ex route to Lowell, by the
steamship Lake Huron, of the Beaver
line. It was that of Mr Staverly, of
England, a farmer, and consisted of
himxelf and, wife with twelve children,
whose ages are as follows: --28, 19, 18,
15, 14, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 4,and 12 months,.
Mr. and Mrs, Staverley's ages being
respectively 44 and 43 years. All the
children but the last three are boys,

The carnival held at the Roller
Rink on Tuesday night wax a decided
success. There were about 500 in
attendance, and something near $40
was realized. The number in costume
was not so large, as on previous occas-;

were very interesting, The following

centre of the rink, and the first getting
it was the winner. Three legged race

The judges for the evening was Mr.
N. D. Hurdon, Mi A. Walters and

hard sold one day recently, to an
American buyer, a fiue five year old
mare, sired by "Fearnaught Chief," for
the handsome sum of $700.00:—Mr. A.
McDonell shipped 15 brood mares, and
a. fine stallion, "Bismark" purchased'.
from Mr. Chas. Mason, of Egmondville,
to Mr. Sidebottom, of Brandon Man.
—Mr. Sidebottom owns the finest and
largesthorseand sale stables inthatplace.
Mr. McDonell inter dsshipping another
lot about the middle of March, to the
same man, and will also, ship horses
during the coming springand summer
to Sault Ste. Marie.—Mr. Reid of
Bellfontain, Ohio, assisted by Snell
and White, of this place suceeded in
purchasing some of the best horses in
this county, among them the following:
Imported stallion, "Howell," purchased
from Mr. Charles Bean, of Clandeboye,
Imported mare "Lena" imported from
Scotland by Mr, William Love ,and
purchased from Mr. Wilson, of Seaforth;
Canadian stallion 2 years old, bred by
and purchased from Mr. James Mc-
Michael, of Seaforth. This beast secured
2nd, prize at London, and 2nd, at
13rucefield laet year. Yearling stallion
"Lord Nelson,' 2 years old, purchased
fron:eMr. W. Hawkshav, of Seaforth.
This animal was sired by the noted
prize horse, "McAlpine." He also pur-
chased a full blood Shetland pony from`
Mr. W. Hawkshaw of Seaforth. and al-
so eleven other brood mares from dif•
ferent parties, which he shipped Yes -
day to his stables in Bellfountain. Mr.
Reid has one of the best breeding and
sale establishments in the state of Ohio,
and with this load, will have the -

where in that vicinity.
