The annual tea meeting in connect-
ion with Willis church, was held on
Monday evening last. Very interest-
ing addresses were delivered, and a
handsome sum was realized.
Mr. Paisley, Inspector of morals,
&c., "came down like a wolf on the
fold" last week, and summoned the
manager of the Grand Union to ap-
pear before the Police Magistrate to
atisevd to a charge of violating the
Scott Act. " On Saturday the case•
:came up 'fpr trial, and the defendant
was fined $1013 and costs. In the
meantime the manager left town, and
the Scott Act -officials were minus the
spoils.

The arrangement for'the important
celebrations of 1889 and 1892 are pro-
gressing satisfactorily. It is proposed
to hold both of them here in Wash-
ington, the first being the centary of
the Constitution of these 'United States
and the second a world's expositjpn in
honor of the four hundredth annivor-
rary of the discovery of America .Tlae
and has a knowledge of our gee -en: -
mental atlitirs which is possessed 1 v
very few men. While the ways aid
means committee is not holding airy
tariff sessions the majority of the com-
mittee are hard at work on a bill.
They are working very quietly,and are
very hopeful of success. There has
been no formal canvass of the house
on the question,, but in an informal way
many members have been sounded.
A hill will be reported at an early date,
and there will probably be but little if
any opposition to its consideration..
The indications are that the matter
-will be taken up in a spirit of conci;i-
ation as far as the two factions of the
party is concerned and a bill will cone
out of the committee of the whole in
such a shape as to secure the votes of
a majority of the house though it will
be scarcely what any of them would
have if they could get just what they
want
