Juvenile Thirryery at Ueftnorc
The village of Belmar() is becoming
notorious for the genuine badesess of
the young lade growing up within ite
borders, For some months there bas
been an epidemic of thieving and mis-
chief in that district, and the matter
came to a climax last week when a
valuable watch was stolen from the
packet of a vest of a carpenter working
at Mr, Fleming .i3allagh's new house,
The vest had been left hanging near
the building and the gang was sus-
pected of the theft. Constable Phil).
pen of Wiugham, visited the burg on
Friday lass and rounded up the buucb,
and secured a confession from one of
the xnernbers. This lad admitted eteal-
ing the watch, but said he had smas.t-
ed it and thrown it away. 'Phis story
is not believed, however, as another
bigger boy has been seen with the time
piece in his possession, The trip rope
connected with the hay fork at Mr.
Ballagh's barn was cut to pieces re-
cently, and the gang gets credit also
for this piece of vandalism. It is time
for a general cleaning up in that
neighborhood,—Mildmay Gazette,

Famous Oarsmen Killed.
The roll of -honor of the winners of
the Diamond Smile at Henley, 'the
proudest trophy of amateur single -
sculling, grows with the progress of
the war. Last week's casualty lists
included the name of Capt. Frederick
Septimus Kelly, Royal Naval Volun-
teer Reserve, killed in action. With-
in the last few weeks the names of
the wiry A, T. B1aekstaffe, of the
Vesta, and Giuseppe Singaglia, the
giant Italian scull.er, were also re-
ported. Kelly was an Australian,
but had done practically all bis row-
ing in England for Oxford and the
Leanders. He won the Diamonds in
1003 and 1905, but was beaten in
1904 by Lieut, Lou Scholes, of the
180th Sportsmen's Battalion, then
representing the Toronto Rowing
Club, They met in the semi-finals,
and Kelly was go badly done up in
the struggle that lee had to give up
about 50 yat•ds froul the finish, and
did not complete the couzrse. Lieut.
Seholos had beaten D. C. Stuart, of
Cambridge, and Wells of Balliol,
earlier in the week, and in the final
he won from A. H. Cloutte, of the
Thames Rowing Club, though ho had
to beat the Henley course record be-
fore he disposed 01 Cloutte. Kelly-,
who also won the Winefield Sculls
over the full Thames courzt e, was a
fine sweep .oarsman, as well as a
sculler, and was in the winning
Grand crew of the Leand -rs on rev
oral occasions. He and Scholes NWT -
