Obituaries DOUGLAS CAMPBELL FRASER Douglas Campbell Fraser of RR2, Blyth. passed away at Wingham and District Hospital on Thursday, Dec. 11. 2003. Doug was in his 78th year. Born in Stratford on Oct. 28, 1926. Doug spent his early years in Stratford and attended Juliet Public School. His parents moved the Songs of Christmas Men, women and children gathered to hear the beautiful Christmas melodies from the Brussels Ministerial Annual Christmas Carolfest on Dec. 14 at St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church. Many local church choirs came to share their musical talent including Duff’s United Church, St. John’s Anglican Church, Brussels United Church, Brussels Mennonite Fellowship and Melville Presbyterian Church. They settled on the eighth concession of Morris Twp. and he completed his elementary school years at Button School. As a young man he learned farming skills and made friendships with many young people in the Walton area. Many of those people have remained friends and neighbours to this day. Doug married Marjory Hackwell on Oct. 22, 1948 and they rented a house for one year before buying a farm on the 16th Cone, of Grey Twp. Three of their four children were born while they lived on that farm. In I964. they moved to their second farm on the eight of Morris where their fourth child was born. Doug and Marjory built their retirement bungalow on the eighth of Morris in the early 1990s. Doug was always a very social person, enjoying his family and friends as well as taking part in community activities. The family celebrated many occasions with reunions and Doug loved to meet with his friends at the Saturday night dances. He was also a willing participant in community plays, card parties, parades or fundraising events. Duff’s United Church played a vital role in Doug’s life and he served on many of the boards of the church such as stewardship, elders, ministry, personnel, as well as the choir. Doug was active in the community as a member of the Federation of Agriculture and the Huron County Hog Board. He served on the board of directors of the Ontario Cream Producers as the Huron-Perth representative. He was a founding member of the Brussels section of the Diabetes Association. He served on Morris Twp. council for 14 years, five as a councillor and nine as reeve. As reeve he was part of the Huron County council and through these activities many lifelong friends were made. Travelling to many locations was a pleasure for Doug. He and Marjory visited England. France, Jamaica. Nova Scotia and as well made several trips to Branson, MO to enjoy the music. Shopping was also a favourite activity and he recently wanted to show everyone his new car or the features of his new TV. Doug will be sadly missed by his beloved wife Marjory and his children Carolyn Sullivan and her husband Gerry of Waterloo. Dianne Blake and her husband Phil of Waterloo. Clayton Fraser and his wife Bev of Tecumseh, and Cheryl Mader and her husband Glenn of Cambridge. He was the dear brother of Don Fraser and his wife Melva of RR2, Blyth and Iva Marshall of Brampton. Doug was also loved by his grandchildren Jeremy. Mark. Craig. Amanda. Sarah, Lucas and Garett. He was also a loving great­ grandfather to Kacie. Doug was predeceased by sister Myrtle, brother Glen and his parents Malcolm Fraser and Nora Campbell. Friends were received from 2 - 4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Schimanski Family Funeral Home. Brussels. The funeral service was conducted from Duff’s United Church. Walton, Saturday. Dec. 13 al 1 p.m. with Rev. Joan Tuchlinsky officiating and Mrs. Glenda Morrison as organist. In tribute of Doug, solos were performed by Patty Banks and Brian Black. Carrying floral tributes were Doug’s grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers were Gerald Watson. Campbell Wey. Emerson Mitchell. Jim Smith and Allan Searle. Active pallbearers were George Zwep, Jerry Zwep, Randy Fraser, Blair Fraser. Jim Cook and Murray Houston. Spring interment will be in Brussels Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to Duff’s United Church.
