Grey Central Echo Grey ‘buzzing’ with festive preparations Grey Central is buzzing with Christmas preparations and festivities. Last week, amid concert practices and special baking, students participated in a penny auction and white elephant sale. For the past week, students have assembled once a day for a carol sing. The Grey Central Christmas dinner will be held on the Tuesday. Dec. 16 for the entire school. Kindergarten B will enjoy their special meal when they come to school on Wednesday. Family and friends are invited to Grey Central’s Christmas concert on Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m. There will be a silver collection at the door. Kelly Byles’s piano students will be providing a prelude to the concert starting at 7 p.m. On Thursday, Dec. 18. the Listowel District Secondary School choir will be performing for the students at Grey. On Friday afternoon, students will be bussed to the BMG Community Centre to skate. In Miss Hill’s Grade 1/2 class, they are enjoying language activities. In math, they are adding and subtracting doubles. They are learning about different Christmas traditions in social studies and in art they are making decorations for the Christmas play. Last week Mrs. Smith’s Grade 2 class participated in several Christmas activities, including the making of a Christmas Favourite Recipe Cookbook, Christmas alphabet activities and writing letters to Santa. They are also working on a personal time line, which is a record of important events during their lives, birth to present. Mrs. Taylor’s Grade 3s are reviewing photosynthesis in science. They’ve been learning about how the pioneers kept Christmas in social studies. They have also been singing Christmas carols in music. Last week the Grade 4 students read and responded to a story called Joe’s Junk, which is part of a new assessment kit called CASI. Each of the stories in the CASI kit is accompanied by a set of follow up questions that evaluates each student’s performance of a variety of essential reading skills. Mrs. Mitchell is scoring the class set of Joe’s Junk papers against the evaluation criteria and work samples in the CASI kit. The information that comes from this assessment will help her plan the reading program. CASI stands for Comprehension, Attitude, Strategies and Interests. It is an assessment tool that was developed by the Toronto District School Board and has subsequently been purchased by the Avon Maitland District School Board. All of Grey Central’s junior level (Grade 4. 5 and 6) teachers have attended in-service in the last month and will be using CASI as an assessment tool. The Grade 4 students will be bidding a fond farewell to Mr. Al Harrison at the end of the week. They wish to thank Mr. Harrison for being an super math and language teacher this fall while Mrs. Mitchell was on maternity leave. In Mrs. Murray’s Grade 5 class, they're working on the Christmas concert called A Real Canadian Christmas on Dec. 17. Some of the students are proud because they have improved their reading skills by reading aloud to Mrs. Wood, whose help is greatly appreciated. In Mr. Payne’s Grade 8 class, they are starting a new story in literature called The Gift of The Magi by O. Henry. It is a Christmas story dealing with love, giving and irony. In drama they made sentences with two nouns, one verb, one adjective and one adverb and put them in a hat. Someone had to reach into the hat, pick a sentence and act it out. The Grade 8s enjoyed this game of charades. Safety in Home Heating If you drop a match into a container of pure home heating oil, the match is instantly extinguished.
