UCW members brave weather Pat and Pearl Mason celebrated 50 years of marriage with an open house at Hullett Central Public School on Saturday afternoon. (Vicky Bremner photo) Masons celebrate 50th It may have been a little frosty on the outside but the auditorium of Hullett Central Public School was filled with warm wishes as friends, neighbours and relatives dropped by to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of Pat and Pearl Mason. A trellis covered with pictures recorded the years of marriage for the couple and brought visitors up to date on the families and activities of Pat and Pearl’s six surviving children. Balloons abounded. Guests had their pictures taken as they arrived by granddaughter, Tonya and these were put in a scrapbook to be enjoyed by the couple for years to come. Some 130 well 'wishers from London, St. Thomas, Kincardine and Huron County offered congratulations. Pearl Culbert of West Wawanosh, a daughter of Nelson and Blanche, married the son of Walter and Ethel Mason of East Wawanosh at the Clinton United Church manse on Dec. 5, 1953. Rev. Wilson officiated. The couple was attended by James and Irma Mason. They resided in Clinton, Carlow, Dungannon and Belgrave before moving to Londesborough in 1969. Albert was employed throughout his working life at the air base, as a farmer, a milk truck driver for the Blyth cheese factory, a gravel truck driver and at the Stanley door factory. He retired in 1990. Albert enjoys refinishing furniture, while Pearl fills her time with crocheting, knitting and as a member of the United Church Women. Family members, 32 of them, remained at the school to celebrate Christmas together. School holds Winit assembly Hullett Central Public School held its December Winit assembly on Monday, Dec. 1. Examples of November’s virtues were acknowledged at that time. A student who always has their homework done on time, then helps others to get finished exemplified helpfulness. Loyalty was found in a female student who is true to her friends and never causes dissension. Always trusted to do what is asked of him to the best of his ability shows one student’s enthusiasm. The use of “please” and “thank you” by a student was the example rewarded for the virtue of respect. Tonight at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10 the school presents its Christmas concert/evening of music. Next week the school will have three assemblies for Christmas carolling. You are welcome to join them on Monday, Dec. 15 at 3 p.m.; on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. and on Friday the last day of classes before the Christmas break at 2 p.m. Strong winds and an ominous forecast certainly affected the attendance at the annual Christmas gathering for women of Londesborough United Church. Those who braved the elements enjoyed a potluck meal. An Advent devotion titled “Gel Ready, Get Set” was offered by Kittie MacGregor and Harriett Shillinglaw. In Jeremiah 3: 14-16, God assures the people of Israel that despite their sins He will protect them and their descendants. That there will be no end to the kingdom of David and the Israelites is echoed in Luke 1: 26-33. The angel. Gabriel, tells Mary of her impending pregnancy with the Saviour, Jesus Christ. The meditation suggested a number of tips to prepare one’s heart and head for a less stressful but richer Christmas experience. In it the ladies were advised to find a little kindness to offer, to set realistic priorities for the season, to include the wishes of other family members in their celebration plans, to give consideration to our environment when decorating and gifting, to prepare physically for entertaining and gift-giving and to allow time for personal reflection on the season. Laura Scott and Barb Bosman led those in attendance in a Christmas sing-song. Ken and Laura Scott spoke that evening about their April trip to Thailand. Using slides as the starting point they explained a number of once-in-a-lifetime experiences they enjoyed. They chose to go to Thailand to visit their daughter. Shannon, who was teaching in a private, residential school there. The Scotts acknowledged that because they had their own tour guide, Shannon, they were able to experience more than a regular tourist might. Ken and Laura began their presentation by putting their hands together as if praying and bowing to their audience, the traditional Thai greeting. The family took a variety of modes of transportation during their three- week stay in Thailand, an elephant journey into a hill tribe village for an overnight stay; an overnight journey on a train as many local Thais do; and over water on long-tailed boats. Thailand’s main mode of transportation is motorcycle and the Scotts rode in the open carl attached to these motorcycles. The people of Thailand have begun to welcome tourist dollars as the ordinary Thai is very poor and working conditions for their trades are harsh. Ken and Laura showed and talked about the items they brought home to remind them of their trip as well. They mentioned also a number of customs they discovered and trips to the bridge over the river Kwai and its POW cemetery, a water festival, village markets, strange foods and the schools they toured.
