Nominations for the first Young Leaders in Rural Canada Awards are now being accepted. The awards, sponsored by the Rural Secretariat, were announced earlier this year at the first National Rural Youth Conference by the Honourable Andy Mitchell, Secretary of State (Rural Development) (Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario). The awards were created to honour the work of youth between the ages of 18 and 29 in one of three categories: Innovation, Leadership and Partnerships. “This awards program is the Government of Canada’s way to recognize young people who share their passion, spirit and skills to benefit their communities.” said Mitchell. "Young people from right across the country have identified how important innovation, leadership and partnerships are to a healthy and vibrant rural Canada.” Nominations will be evaluated by a panel representing the Government of Canada, the National Rural Youth Network, the Rural Advisory Committee and Rural Teams. The winners will be presented with their awards at the National Rural Conference in Red Deer. Alberta, next April Our youth are not only the leaders ot tomorrow, but ol today," added Mitchell, “it is important that we acknowledge their outstanding contributions." The deadline lor nominations is Monday, Jan. 12.
