Letter from Israel Group visits Hula Valley Nature Reserve Editor’s note: Sandra Clark of Brussels is off on a second pilgrimage to Israel as part of a group of Christian women. Last week my group and I went to the Hula Valley Nature Reserve. This is at the north end of the Sea of Galilee not far from Lebanon. In the late 1960s after Israel won their war of independence, they filled in many swamp areas to gain useable land and to control the malaria-carrying mosquitoes. They planted eucalyptus trees which are known to take a lot of water out of the land. The Australians call these gum trees. One of these areas was in the Hula Valley. The price was a huge loss of habitat for birds and animals - especially the thousand upon Congregation reads Psalm 132 Continued from page 2 with God’s love”, she told the children before they left to attend their Sunday School classes. Psalm 132 was read responsively. Members were informed that the words of this Psalm were actually the last words recorded of King David. Scripture readings were 2 Samuel 23: 1-7; Revelation 1: 4-8 and John 18: 33-37 in which the story of King David was further developed. Mary Ann Aitchison acted as reader assisting Rev. Campbell. In the sermon, Kings and Kingdoms, congregants looked at David’s example as the greatest king in Israelite history but one with weaknesses. “Today is Christ the King Sunday”, said Rev. Campbell. And this assertion that Christ was thousands of birds that use the area as a rest stop on their route to wintering grounds from Eastern Europe. It was also an ecological disaster because these swamps filtered the water that flowed into the Sea of Galilee from the mountains and the mineral carrying springs. Eventually they realized how much damage this was causing and set about trying to correct it. The first (temporary) measure was to run a channel of manmade materials around the Galilee from where the water entered the Lake to where it runs out in to the River Jordan. Following this they started to put the water back in a portion of the land by returning it to its natural state. It has been a huge success and they are hoping to keep increasing the .ling of the universe was made in 1925 at the time when dangerous powers were developing in Europe. The idea is that all monarchs fade into nothing by comparison with Christ. Relating this present times. Rev. Campbell asked, “Who or what rules our lives? How do we balance our allegiances with truth?” A comparison was made between the very splendid Pilate in his court with the bedraggled Jesus standing in front of him. One represented a kingdom of earth and the other the Kingdom of God. The power of Pilate was omnipotent in his country, but of Christ, the power is eternal and infinite. The collection was gathered by Bill King, Bill Aitchison, Maurice Douma, and Brian Armstrong. the area until it is back to its former area. We were there for about three hours, timing our visit so we could have a good look at other birds and wait until the migrating birds came in to roost for the night. We saw hawks, including a hawk that’s name is some type of buzzard, a kingfisher that was brilliant turquoise on the back and brilliant orange on the front and another one that was turquoise and a soft brown. There were white ibis, storks and other beautiful native birds. Then the excitement started. The pelicans and cranes started coming in by the thousands. The pelicans are so huge that they make the cranes and herons look small. There were also glossy ibises. There were birds Senior choir practice is on Thursday night and the board of managers will meet on Thursday night. HE councillor worried about burning rubble By Andrea Hruska Special to The Citizen Huron East councillor Larry McGrath wants to be sure the health of Vanastra residents is the primary concern before a request to burn unsalvaged rubble from one of the old RCAF buildings is granted. McGrath noted the diligence respected businessman Gary Van Dorp has shown jn managing the salvage operation at the RCAF building he purchased approximately a year ago but wanted to ensure the burn piles would contain no asbestos material. Asbestos is a naturally-occurring mineral found in rock and soil. The buildings were built around the 1940s, an era that saw the use of asbestos gain in popularity in the manufacturing of rope, fabric, friction products, tiles, shingles and insulation. McGrath explained that Van Dorp's property, which is located near the corner of Vanastra Road and Hwy. 4, is just west of a residential area. This concerned him because the smoke from the fire could blow toward the homes. Early into amalgamation, Huron East passed a bylaw that states any We returned ‘home’ yesterday from four days in the Galilee walking in Jesus’ footsteps including a visit to Capernaum, and Nazareth. Sandra. fires in “urban areas” are to be for “cooking only”. Council acknowledged McGrath’s concern and felt that permission could be granted to burn the remaining material provided the piles were inspected by the fire chief for any asbestos, who would then be aware of the “controlled burn”, as well as setting a date in the spring by which any remaining debris would be cleared away. Deputy-mayor Bernie MacLellan suggested April 15 which council felt to be reasonable.
