Boomers face respiratory disease crisis Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the few leading causes of death that is on the rise, and by 2020 is expected to be the third-leading cause of death worldwide. In Canada, more than 500,000 people over the age of 35 have been diagnosed with COPD, and it is estimated that an almost equal number of middle-aged Canadians may also have COPD, but are not aware of it. Despite its prevalence, a recent Ipsos-Reid poll conducted Oct.28-30 uncovered that only eight per cent of Canadians know what COPD is. On Nov. 19, World COPD day, The Lung Association and its medical section, the Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS) responded by introducing a self-assessment tool, The Canadian Lung Health Test. “Our goal at The Lung Association is to help Canadians recognize COPD symptoms so they can initiate Bluewater Recycling still setting standard The Bluewater Recycling Association continues to set the standard in the field of municipal waste diversion in Ontario. At the recent Recycling Council of Ontario (RCO) 2002 Waste Minimization Awards ceremony held in Mississauga, the Association was presented with the Platinum Award, for the fifth year in a row for Municipal Waste Diversion as well as in the honour of being acknowledged as the Best Waste Diversion Program Operator. On hand to accept the award on behalf of the membership of the Association was Meredith Schneider, chairman of the board of directors of the Association and councillor for the Town of North Perth. These awards recognize the Ontario leaders who have made •significant contributions and achievements in waste minimization in 2002. This year’s awards were presented in conjunction with Waste Reduction Week, which has become a national event intended to raise public consciousness about waste and its environmental and social ramifications. Waste Reduction Week’s theme, Too Good to Waste, is about conveying an appreciation for the richness and beauty of our diverse world and how we can protect the environment by conserving resources and curbing wasteful practices.
