PAGE 16. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2003. Willard updates on economic development By Clare Willard North Huron Economic Development Officer The Twp. of North Huron economic- development committee meets once a month and is comprised of reeve, councillors from North Huron and Morris/Turnberry. Business support groups are represented by: the Bly th Idea Group, Blyth Business Association and the Wingham and Area Chamber of Commerce. Information is presented from other resources such as farm organization and event organizers. Municipal staff are also in attendance. The Township of North Huron Economic Development Committee’s mandate is to: • promote, encourage and assist in economic growth and development, including future municipal service needs. • to encourage increased opportunities for youth. • to foster a municipality that is based on key valves: • Community Pride • Progress • Co-operation • Good Communication • Good Environmental Stewardship The committee is actively researching and formulating a vision for the community’s future. To this end the township has seen fit to invest in their economic future by hiring on a part-time basis, an economic development officer. North Huron is one of only two municipalities in Huron County to have taken this initiative. This study, The Economic Readiness Program, will provide an educated picture of where we are and where we need to go, the strengths and the weaknesses of our economic profile. Final reports are being drawn at this time and will be presented in the near future. North Huron has also, entered into a funded program through Huron Business Development Corporation to bring in a co-ordinator to specifically look at the uniqueness of Blyth and how to enhance the natural assets of a small rural village and how to attract retailers. This study, which heavily involves the community and puts great value on volunteers and their contribution to the community, will probably result in a report that will be vital to future planning. The economic development committee is also involved with the formulation of the township’s secondary plan, this plan, mandated under provincial legislation provides the guidelines for County planners and lays the blueprint of the face of the community for years to come. This plan designates areas for development for residential, commercial and industrial growth, along with evaluating and protecting our recreation and natural environments. Results from studies are used, along with the latest provincial and environment guidelines. This plan, as with all municipal planning amendments will be presented for community input at a public meeting before final drafting and adoption. In the past months this committee has formulated an in-depth program to work in partnership with local Continued on page 17 LYTH Lights up for Christmas •/> ?Blyth Community Christmas J} 1 3 p.m. Brought to you by the Blyth Business Association and Blyth Lions Club November 29,2003 Blyth Community Memorial Hall Free family viewing of Elmo Saves Christmas in the theatre. © Santa Claus will arrive on stage at the theatre.
