When it came to picking a winner
in this year’s Huron County Photo
Contest the choice was clear.
Blyth resident Carol
McDonnell’s photo of a child
reaching up to pet a horse earned
her first overall prize and a one-
night’s stay at the Benmiller Inn.
The contest, co-sponsored by
Carman’s foto source, the Town of
Goderich, the Huron Tourism
Association and The Goderich

David Sparling of Sparling’s Propane accepts a tongue-in-cheek offering from students
involved in a module for gifted students in Grades 7, 8, 9, 10 at Blyth Festival. Thirty-two
students from across the county participated in the module, “Gusto”, a one-day workshop held
Wednesday. Students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the arts by experiencing
the theatre firsthand. There was a tour, a chat with artistic director Eric Coates and a self
generated piece that the students created collectively. Prior to Mr. Sparling’s arrival the group
were doing drama exercises with Young Company director Gil Garratt. It required that they
show an unwillingness to part with a beloved object. Sparling’s donated money for the day.

450 entries from as far away as
Michigan and throughout Ontario.
“I made an off-hand remark and
next thing I knew this committee
was struck,” said Carman’s foto
source manager Jeff Sword.
Sword said entries came in
slowly at first but near the end there
were hundreds from which to
choose.
“There were a lot of good entries.
It was hard to judge,” Sword said.
Sword was joined by Goderich
Deputy Mayor Ellen Connelly and
Signal-Star sports editor Chris
Colbourne as judges for the
contest. “We’re so pleased it was a
success,” Connelly told a large
gathering last week before the
winners were announced.
Entries were accepted for five
categories including nature,
wildlife and trails; events and
attractions (including sports and
recreation); urban and rural
landscapes; sunrises and sunsets;
and people at work and play.
Peter Vandorp, of the Exeter area,
took home first prize in the sunsets
category. Runners-up were
Goderich residents Paul Cousteils
and Tina Wilson.
Suzanne Kennedy, of the Clinton
area, took home first prize in the
nature category. Runners-up were
Jan Hullah, of Goderich, and
Maggie Brennan, of Bayfield.
Lisa Pot, of the Auburn area, took
home first prize in the events
category. Runners-up were Joan
Perrie, of the Walton, and Greg
Fisher, of Goderich.
Muriel Taylor, of the Wingham
area, took home first prize in the
urban and rural landscapes
category. Runners-up were
Rebecca Ingham, of Goderich, and
Roba Lobb. Perrie, took home first
prize in the people at work and
place category. Runners-up were
Sally MacEwan, of Goderich, and
David Beamer, of the Clinton area.
Photos received now become the
property of Tourism Goderich and
the Huron Tourism Association and
will be considered for publication
in future tourism guides.
“We are thrilled with the entries,”
said HTA member Cindy Fisher.
“We’ve always had photos stored
for our tourism guides but this
gives us different eyes behind the
camera.”
Those interested in viewing the
entire collection of photos can
purchase a photo CD for $7.99
from Carman’s foto source on The
Square in Goderich.
