The Citizen, 2003-11-12, Page 17THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2003. PAGE 17. CBC Radio, St. John’s sponsor seasonal reading As part of the preparations for the Christmas season, CBC Radio and St. John’s Anglican Church, Brussels present a reading of Charles Dickens’A Christmas Carol on Thursday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. in St John’s Church at the corner of Turnberry Street and McCutcheon Drive in Brussels. In December of 1989, Judy Maddren, a broadcaster with CBC Radio, and her family had the opportunity to read the complete Christmas Carol. She realized that once grown up, people usually leave behind the pleasure of being read to, and thought, ...wouldn’t it be wonderful to read A Christmas Carol to adults. A few years after writing the original story, Dickens had shortened it so he could present it as Quilts generate folk wisdom Continued from page 12 stretching the number.” Effie used to have a concession at the Thresher Reunion each September, and has sold her quilts all over America. Like many quilters, she has given away many of her quilts as wedding gifts and baby blankets. She donated one quilt to Memorial Hall, which was raffled by the Festival Theatre as a fundraising project. Quilts have generated a lot of folk wisdom, homespun philosophy, and quilting theology. The patchwork quilt, in particular, has come to symbolize life itself. It’s created from patches of cloth that are saved rather than discarded, and eventually quilted into a larger, original design. Just like the Creator’s plan for our life. God is the original quilter of the universe, but he gives us the an evening’s entertainment. With the briefer text in hand, and the support of her colleagues at CBC radio, Maddren set about mounting a public reading with music. She organized the first public reading in December 1990 to benefit a local women’s shelter. From that one successful night the event has grown dramatically and now is presented by CBC Radio, in conjunction with local partners, in over 80 communities across Canada (as well as ’.eadings in the United States) for the benefit of local charities similar in nature to those Charles Dickens himself promoted: children, literacy, less fortunate families, education for all, and health care. The pleasure of a good story heard for the first time (or the sixth time), responsibility for quilting together our own lives. God gives us the daily patches; we do the quilting and stitching together into appropriate design. The Master who gave us our patches, Will know if we’ve done our best. The Quilters Blyth has a special room if you should take a look, On Sundays it’s for Sunday school and weekdays it’s the quilter’s nook. The ladies meet most any day, no matter what the weather, You’ll find them gathered ’round the quilt, stitching away together. They’ve quilted thus for years and years, they done them by the score, The waiting list is endless, there’s always just “one more.” The quilts have different patterns and some have fancy names, the joy of music of the Christmas season, and the inspired energy of people who want to make communities a better place, all come together in this presentation of A Christmas Carol. “Most of us lead fortunate lives, and this event helps to remind us of what we have, and what we can give,” said Rev. Tom Wilson. CBC Radio and St. John’s invite all those who are interested in the local community to come and enjoy, this festive evening. At St John’s on Dec. 11, the Special Readers for this performance will be: Judy Maddren, host of CBC Radio’s morning news World Report, Carol Mitchell, Huron- Bruce MPP, Kelly McIntosh, actor, playwright and director most You never know just what you’ll find inside the quilting frame. They could be called the “happy gang” this cheery quilting crew, The fellowship is genuine among these faithful few. If you ever feel discouraged, well that’s the place to go. You’ll soon forget your troubles as you chat away and sew. A quilt could well be classed as art, its beauty to behold, This craft has stood the test of time, it’s lovely, quaint and old. Quilters are like artists and beauty is their game, The needle is their paintbrush, their easel is the quilting frame. Blyth’s quilters come each week, the time they give is free. Making tiny stitches, while enjoying the sociability. - Author unknown recently at the Blyth Festival, Paul Steckle, Huron-Bruce MP, John Spencer, newly-retired Anglican archdeacon of Huron and Perth.
