Armstrongs greet
Greeting at the door on Sunday
morning at Melville Presbyterian
Church were members of the family
of Bruce and Claudette Armstrong.
Special music. In Flanders Fields
was played as an anthem by organist
Crystal McLellan during the morning
greeting.
Continuing the theme of
Remembrance Day, Clifford Coultes
took on the task of conducting the
children’s story. He read to them,
from The Citizen the Wesselink
family’s account of their WW1I war
experience and the liberation by
Canadian soldiers. The whole
congregation then recited in unison
John McCrae’s famous poem, In
Flanders Fields, and the children
went down to their Sunday school
lessons.
With Rev Cathrine Campbell
leading. Psalm 147 was read
responsively by everyone. Scripture
lessons: Ruth 4: I - 10; Hebrews 9: 27
to Hebrews 10: 1 -4; Mark 12: 38 -
44 were read with Leona Armstrong
assisting Rev. Campbell.
The collection was taken up by Bill
Aitchison, Maurice Douma, Brian
Armstrong and Bill King.
The sermon, What did you see?,
was about the busyness of situations
and looking through the activity to
see what is really meaningful.
Continuing last week’s story told in
the book of Ruth, Naomi was about to
sell land that had belonged to her son.
and as was their custom their closest
kinsman had first chance to keep the
land ownership in the family. Boaz, a
lesser kinsman, was attracted to Ruth
and was negotiating to buy the land
and claim Ruth as his wife.
At the end, Boaz and Ruth finally
married and had a child who became
the ancestor of King David. This child
was the important event for Naomi
who had returned to her country as a
widow. The birth of this child
redeemed her status among her
people because now she had offspring
and the family line would be
continued.
The Gospel of Mark, tells who is
really important. Jesus and his
disciples were watching all the rich
and influential people putting money
in the treasury of the temple with a
great show of generosity. The widow
dropped in two small copper coins.
Jesus said that her gift was greater
because she had given all that she
had.
From this example. Rev. Campbell
said, “It’s a time of remembrance. We
are called to remember those who
gave their all just as this widow gave
everything she had in the temple. And
in a time of war, the most amazing
heroics are usually done by ordinary
people and soldiers, instead of
important leaders”.
Thanks to Rick and Margaret
Mclnroy for their capable
organization of Melville’s family
dance in Walton Hall last Friday
evening.
Bible study will be held at Helen
Elliott’s home on Thursday at 2 p.m.
Junior choir practice is on Tuesday
evening at 6:30 p.m. Also on Tuesday,
the video study group will meet at
Tammy and Bill King’s home to view
Bowling for Columbine, a film abbut
the tragic shooting in Littleton,
Colorado.
Next Sunday, Nov. 16 the sermon
will be given by Julia Mitchell who is
currently enrolled in a course that
trains lay preachers. It is directed by
Rev. Peter Bush and Chris O’Reilly.
