PEOPLE AROUND
WALTON

The big news around Walton
would centre on the annual turkey
supper. Almost the whole village
helps as workers, diners or both.
This year’s the largest crowd in
quite some time, over 800 attended
the event at the BM&G Community
Centre on Wednesday.
Tuesday was the big day with
about a dozen women doing the
morning preps to get ready for the
delivery of the fresh turkeys. More
than two dozen women readied the
turkeys, peeled the potatoes,
chopped the turnip and packed up all
the necessary pots, pans, tubs, etc. to
go to the arena.
On Wednesday they descended
upon the community centre with hot
turkeys and fresh pies in tow ready
to satisfy the crowd. Congrats to all
the tired folk of Duff’s United
Church for a job well done.
Of course it was deer hunting this
past week as well, which took in
many local men and some women
too. From those I talked to, the hunt
was a little tougher going because of
the still standing com but not a bad
week weatherwise. The
Siemon/McDonald hunters managed
to get eight deer for their efforts. The
Russel McCallum/ Hoegy group
managed just one nice eight-point
buck in their group.
The Glanville gang had their 10 by
Wednesday night also getting an
eight-point buck. The White gang
managed to get 11 in their week of
hunting.
Not my idea of fun tramping
through swamp and bush but there
seems to be a lot of men out there
who enjoy it.
The Walton Inn was host to some
local people who gathered to
celebrate Kathleen Williamson’s
birthday on Friday at lunch time.
Congrats to Kathleen.
Guest speaker at Duff’s
The guest speaker at Duff’s United
Church, Walton on Sunday was
Barbara Hicks. You may be more
familiar with her known as Spooney,
being director of Camp Menesetung
at Goderich for many years.
The congregation was welcomed
to service by Ian and Mark Wilbee
and the organ was played by Marion
Godkin.
Barbara Hicks pointed out the
announcements and especially the
note of thanks to the women, men
and youth who co-operated so
wonderfully and worked together for
the successful turkey supper.
The Sunday school children are

Mint Smoothies until Christmas and
Belgrave
Don Procter of Belgrave is
beginning a three-year (MCC)
assignment as an Aboriginal
Neighbours service worker in
Southwestern Ontario. Procter
obtained a master’s degree in
theological studies from Wilfrid
Laurier University, Waterloo. He is a
member of Brussels Mennonite
Fellowship.
Forty-seven workers participated
in orientation held at (MCC)
headquarters Sept. 2 - Sept. 16.
Fifteen are beginning overseas
The Walton Hall was the place to
be Friday evening as music
abounded within its walls. Melville
Presbyterian Church hosted a family
dance with music provided by some
local musicians. Delighting those in
attendance with their musical talents
were Phyllis Mitchell, Jamie
Mitchell, Murray and Sherry McCall
on fiddle, Marjorie Humphries,
piano and Jim Lee on bass.
It was an old-time dance with
ladies bringing lunch.
Our sympathy goes to Reta
Johnson Elliott on the loss of her son
Wayne in the west. Our condolences
to her and other family members.
A status report on Brian Workman
- is home and progressing. He has
therapy three times a week and tries
to get swimming a couple of times
each week. Joanne reports good
days and bad and a quick phone call
before dropping over is appreciated.
Our hopes for a speedy recovery
go to Heidi McClure who has
broken her ankle. The trooper she is,
she still helped at the turkey supper
by taking tickets and drying dishes.
A feast
Volunteers were busy on Wednesday preparing for Duff’s
United Church’s annual turkey supper held at the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community Centre. (Bonnie Gropp photo)
remind you they make great stocking
stuffers and nice hostess gifts too.
Abby McGavin is beginning her
drive to collect winter coats to
donate to those in need. It is her way
of using her time and talent for
stewardship to be able to help those
less fortunate. Please bring any
donations of winter coats, mittens,
scarves to the church or to Abby
McGavin’s (Brian and Shelley’s).
The Duff’s board meeting is
Thursday, Nov. 13 at 8 p.m.
This Sunday’s service will be an
intergenerational service focusing on
children.
Ms Hicks called the children to the
front. Her theme was Remembrance
Day. She asked them about the
man with MCC
assignments; 32 are beginning North
American assignments.
MCC is the service, development
and relief agency of North American
Mennonite and Brethren in Christ
churches. Each year some 250
people enter MCC assignments in
more than 50 countries in North
America, Asia, Europe, the Middle
East and Latin America. Currently
867 board-appointed MCC workers
serve in assignments such as
community development, education,
health, food production, emergency
Congratulations to Darryl and
Glenda Morrison on the birth of
Justin James Morrison on Thursday.
The mommy and baby are doing just
fine and Amanda is happy to have a
baby brother.
Visiting Hyde Park on Sunday
were Murray and Olene Dennis to
celebrate their grandson Kevin’s
second birthday. Steve and Elaine
and little one Rachel were the hosts
of the day.
Saturday was the open house
presented by Boumatic 21st Century
dairy equipment at the farm of Bert
and Susan Buffinga. They were
featuring the newest in dairy
equipment, the Excalibur Milking
System in the new barn at Buffingas
on Blyth Road. They welcomed over
500 interested spectators and report
it was quite a success.
Celebrating birthdays this past

Stevenson, Kathleen Williamson,
Steven Huether, Clara Glauser,
Lynda Love, Mark Bachert, Jeanne
Kirkby and Darcy McCutcheon.
Happy birthday to all.

Remembrance. They grew on the
graves of the soldiers buried at
Flanders Fields in France.
Dr. John McCrea wrote the poem
In Flanders Fields. She reminded
them to wear the poppy on the left
side over the heart, again an act of
remembrance that hearts never forget
those lost.
The guest speaker read the
scriptures and her reflection. Row,
Row, Row, Your Boat, dealt with
how people must row their own boat,
choose their own paths and with
God’s help, be led down that path.
The offering was taken by Brian
Wilbee and Lavern Godkin.
response and administration. Many
workers are placed in assignments
where they work directly with local
churches or community groups.
