NH council sees Big Box petition
Solemn occasion
By Bonnie Gropp
Citizen editor
Residents of North Huron
interested in seeing some big box
stores come to Wingham were
assured at the Nov. 3 meeting that
council is behind them.
Presenting the petition which has
roughly 3,000 names. Hilda Stainton
said more were being gathered every
day. “I expect there will be 5,000.”
Stainton said she has been in
touch with representatives from
WalMart, Canadian Tire and Food
Basics and said they have
“expressed interest based on the
petition and pending feasibility
studies.”
While some may be concerned
that the big stores will hurt the
smaller businesses, that is not the
way Stainton sees it.
“Our intent is to keep shoppers in
Wingham. The merchants are
threatened by the number of
shoppers going outside of town to
bigger stores.
Several other people were present
to back up Stainton. However, little
needed to be said as reeve Doug
Layton noted “We have been trying
to get extra businesses into the
community.”
He mentioned that the reason the
community complex was built on its
present site was to accommodate
Canadian Tire. “However they
decided to close out.”
The petition, as well as the names
of the representatives with whom
Stainton spoke, have been referred

(2) Zaccheus. Zaccheus was a much
hated man.
He collected taxes unfairly for the
Romans.
The people were upset with Jesus
when he asked Zaccheus , to come
down from the tree and said He was
going to eat at his house. Zaccheus
was a changed man from then on
when he realized someone cared for
him.
Rev. Bannerman had one world
news item which was about the
death of a veteran from the First
World War at 106 years of age.
There are only 10 veterans left from
that war.
