When it comes to Christmas
decorating for Rhonda Hoegy it's
always been about family.
Hoegy recalls that when her eldest
child Sean was just small, the family
was planning on spending Christmas
away from home. "I had decided not
to put up a tree that year. But my
mom was here for a visit and told me
we had to have a tree. She and Merle
(Rhonda's husband) went shopping
and brought home a real Charlie
Brown tree, which she put her heart
into decorating. Of course, by the

It's all about family when it comes to decorating
enchantment created by festive
decorations. "(A neighbour's) baby
had fallen asleep on the couch and I
remember all the lights from the tree
flickering on her face. She looked
like an angel. That time of year is
always so nice when kids are small."
As her own family grew each took
on their own little tasks in preparing
the house for the holidays. Her
husband, daughter Laurin and
youngest son, Zach, string the lights
outside, while Laurin has always
done the tree lights. (Sean is away to
college).
Putting their beautiful old
Victorian in its festive finery is an
undertaking that Hoegy begins "any
time after Halloween" and tries to
get done all at once.
A Christmas home tour in the
Hamilton/Brantford area presented a
challenge this year, however, as
Hoegy said she was inspired to make
some changes in the usual holiday •
decor. "I get so many ideas from
home tours," she said. For example,
her banister, decorated in a manner
in perfect balance with their home, is
a picture of Victorian elegance with
poinsettias and ribbons. "Without
seeing it on a home tour, I don't
know that I would have tried
flowers. But I love the look."
