Bringing a Ukranian Christmas to Blyth
By Elyse DeBruyn
Citizen staff
Gail Edwards of Blyth brings
Christmas to her home using her
Ukrainian heritage and the
inspiration of her mother's
Christmas spirit.
Edwards. who grew up with the
country look of- Christmas
decorations, said she decided to
carry the homey feeling to the next
generation and let her children
experience Christmas the yvay she
did as a child.
"When I was small, I always
helped my mom decorate the house.
I got to put up the sparkely tinsel
stuff on the trees," said Edwards.
She said when her three girls were
little. they would all join in the
Christmas spirit and decorate the
house, but now that they are older.
the decoration responsibility is left
up to her.
"I don't mind at all. I love making
my home festive this time of year."
Edwards begins decorating for
Christmas around Nov. 1 and keeps
everything up until the end of the
Ukranian Christmas which is Jan.
14.
"It makes you feel better in the
winter to have a warm, comfortable
home," said Edwards. "It's a nice
'feeling to have the candles going.
the decorations up and know that
Christmas is coming."
Every year, Edwards said she
pulls out five "huge" tubs and "tons
of boxes" that will fill her home
with Christmas decor and it only
takes one day of solid decorating to
finish the project.
Edwards' tree is artificial, but that
doesn't stop her from bringing the
scent of pine in.
"I don't like to vacuum up after,
but I do use a lot of fresh greens for
trim. It's small, but really nice and
smells great."
Although she said she doesn't
have a theme to her decor, she
prefers the old-fashioned look.
"I like old-looking toys.
something that my grandfather
would have played with like a tree
ornament of an old-fashioned
looking ,•ocking horse.-
Other decorations around the
home are hand-made by Edwards

Touch of home
Left: Gail Edwards sits in her
comfy chair with her furry
family member while enjoying
the country-style Christmas
decor she chooses each year.
Behind Edwards are three
metal Christmas trees which
she spraypainted herself as
part of her many hand-crafted
decoration. These trees along
with the large and very ornate
one behind, are among the 12
that make her home a
Christmas wonderland.
Above: Edwards creatively
decorated a cabinet in her
dining room with beautiful
wreaths, jolly Santas and
festive-scented candles to
bring the Christmas spirit in
on a cold, blustery winter day.
Edwards spends one full day
making her home a perfect
stop for Santa. (Elyse DeBruyn

In a season so serene and still,
We think of peace and of goodwill;
And in spite of the cold and frost and MOW,
We're warmed by thoughts of the folks we know!
Merry Christmas and heartfelt thanks to all of you.
